PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Operational Policy Summer Student will play a key role in supporting policy research, data management, and stakeholder engagement initiatives. This position is designed to provide hands-on experience in operational policy development and regulatory compliance within the bereavement sector. The successful candidate will contribute to research projects and assist in drafting policy documents, helping to ensure alignment with industry regulations and best practices.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and Analysis

Conduct research on industry trends, legislative requirements, and policy implications for the bereavement sector.

Monitor and gather information on new and existing policies from various levels of government and jurisdictions.

Perform environmental scans to track intergovernmental developments and emerging issues.

Research best practices and contribute insights for policy and operational improvements.
Operational Policy Development and Compliance

Assist in drafting reports, presentations, and summaries based on research findings.

Support the review and revision of internal policies to ensure compliance with the Funeral, Burial, and Cremation Services Act, 2002.

Analyze the impact of sector changes on licensees, consumers, and complaint trends.
Data Management and Reporting
-
Analyze qualitative and quantitative data related to compliance and complaints.

Contribute to reports, briefing notes, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

Work with the Business Systems Analyst to collect and analyze case-specific data, developing standardized reports and performance metrics.

Maintain accurate data in dashboards and reports to inform operational policy decisions.
Stakeholder Engagement

Support engagement with governments at all levels and relevant sector associations.

Assist in the review of stakeholder consultations and feedback processes on operational policy changes.

Help prepare briefing materials and communication documents for stakeholders.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
-Education: Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, or a related field at a recognized institution -Experience: Experience with policy development, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder engagement is an asset. -Technology & Operations: Demonstrated skill in using Microsoft Office Suite products. Experience using data analysis and management systems (eg. Dynamics, Power BI) is an asset. -Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and persuasively.
PHYSICAL/SENSORY DEMANDS

Primarily office-based with frequent use of a computer and virtual communication tools.

Requires strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-paced environment.
WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

Hybrid work environment (office and remote work options).

Hours of work – 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
