About the role

1 temporary full-time position for 4 months intended specifically for students currently enrolled in a law degree program, commencing in May 2026 If you are a motivated law student with a keen interest in public sector law, consider working over the summer in a dynamic environment along with a team of other lawyers within the Law Branch who value hard work and a strong work-life balance.

The City of Edmonton’s Legal Services Branch acts as a full-service law firm for the City, which employs over 10,000 employees and has a total budget in excess of $1.2 billion. Virtually all legal work for the City is handled in-house by Legal Services Branch lawyers. As a summer student with the City of Edmonton, you will have an opportunity to work in multiple areas covered by the Legal Services Branch, including:

  • Commercial and real estate transactions
  • Finance and investment advising
  • Public-private partnerships
  • Expropriation law
  • Bylaw drafting
  • Intellectual property law
  • Tendering and procurement
  • Corporate structure and governance issues
  • Personal injury litigation
  • Real property litigation
  • Construction litigation
  • Bylaw challenges, enforcement and prosecutions
  • Assessment and taxation; and
  • Human resources and employment advising/hearings

Throughout the summer you will be assigned various tasks under the supervision of our lawyers. You will find that the lawyers in the Branch have an open-door policy, and are willing to spend time with students to assist and direct them.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must currently be, or have been, enrolled in a Faculty of Law at an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Experience using Google Workspace applications and legal research software programs

Assets:

  • Experience in Student Legal Services, particularly court experience

Conditions of Employment:

  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
