The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Job Description
The AESO is the sole provider of system access service on the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES). The AESO Customer Grid Access team is responsible for fulfilling this part of the AESO’s mandate. The Project Management team is an integral group which is responsible for the successful management for delivering customer projects in accordance with the AESO connection process.
Project Managers are accountable to projects who have requested system access service. They are the primary contact for projects and lead the decision-making, delivery, and appropriate customer support to meet committed project milestones and timelines.
As the Project Manager, you will be the accountable lead of projects or part of a cross functional team on larger AESO initiatives. You are responsible for the team and task management required to deliver on customer projects who have requested system access service. You are required to make decisions on behalf of the project and the AESO. Your role is expected to pair critical thinking with customer perspectives to making decisions aligned with the connection process and AESO mandate. As the leader of a project team, you are accountable for project delivery performance.
This is a 9-10 month fixed term opportunity. We offer a competitive salary, paid vacation time, 4 fixed days off per year, and health and dental benefits as part of your overall compensation package.

Accountabilities include:
Initiate:
- Understand Customer’s project drivers, clarify and confirm project scope with Customer, identify critical path and ensure all required information for the project has been received.
Planning:
- Establish project scope, schedule, resource and communication requirements.
- Determine required stakeholders.
- Develops risk management plans.
Executing:
- Direct and manage work activities required for the project.
- Ensure all aspects of quality are achieved for project deliverables.
- Effectively communicate with all stakeholders for input, decisions, and updates.
- Manage project priorities and delivery process checkpoint gates.
- Identify and resolve project issues.
- Manage projects in accordance with legislation, regulations and rules that govern AESO activities.
Monitoring and Controlling:
- Validate project progress and quality.
- Maintain complete, accurate and up-to-date information about project status, schedule, accountabilities, and outcomes.
- Validate and control project scope and changes, including schedule changes.
- Monitor project resourcing commitments: identify and work to resolve resource conflicts.
- Control of project communications with internal and external stakeholders.
- Identify and mitigate risks, maintaining and monitoring an up-to-date risk register, including project interdependencies.
- Report on project progress, risks and other updates to the Program Manager/Director, Customer Grid Access.
Closing:
- Close-out of projects as required by AESO processes.
- Identify and implement project management and delivery improvements with the Program Support Team.
You have:
- Bachelor’s degree (Engineering, Business, or other related field), or an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Project Management certification (PMP) would be considered an asset.
- 5+ years of hands-on project management experience preferably in a regulated industry, preferably utilities/electricity.
- A solid understanding of project delivery methodology.
- Skilled in using Microsoft Office Suite to produce project deliverables.

Plan the future of the system and its infrastructure As Alberta grows, so does its need for electricity. We plan ahead and expand the grid, ensuring the right transmission lines are built as efficiently as possible. As the province moves away from coal-fired power plants, we're enabling investment in renewable energy. In everything we do, our eye is always on the future.
