About Nfinite Paper

Nfinite Paper is a venture-backed Waterloo-based start-up specializing in advanced materials. We are leading the charge to tackle plastic waste globally through our pioneering nanocoating solutions for sustainable packaging. Our mission is to save the planet by making all packaging recyclable and compostable.

Position Overview

Nfinite Paper is seeking a Electromechanical Technician to operate, monitor, and maintain our roll-to-roll SALD nanocoating system. This is a hands-on role at the core of our manufacturing and scale-up efforts and ideal for a young, driven, and adaptable individual who enjoys working with both hardware and software, is excited to learn PLC programming, and wants to be part of building a new manufacturing capability from the ground up.

Key Responsibilities

1. System Operation & Process Control

  • Operate Nfinite’s roll-to-roll SALD nanocoating system, including start-up, shutdown, and changeover procedures.
  • Set up substrates, adjust process parameters (speed, temperature, pressure, gas flows, etc.) and run production and experimental coating campaigns.
  • Monitor process performance in real time, identify deviations, and make adjustments within defined limits to maintain coating quality.
  • Record process data, operating conditions, and observations in digital logs and reports.

2. Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and vacuum components of the roll-to-roll system.
  • Assist in diagnosing and resolving equipment issues (mechanical misalignment, sensor failures, wiring issues, etc.) in collaboration with the senior electromechanical technician.
  • Support replacement, adjustment, and calibration of sensors, drives, actuators, and other critical components.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area around the equipment and facility.

3. Automation, PLC & HMI (Growth Area)

  • Learn and support PLC-based control systems (e.g., Beckhoff TwinCAT or similar) used to run the SALD coating system.
  • Assist in implementing and testing changes to machine sequences, alarms, and interlocks under the guidance of engineering.
  • Contribute to HMI (Human Machine Interface) improvements to make the system more intuitive and operator-friendly.
  • Learn and apply basic version control practices (e.g., GitHub) for PLC and automation code changes.

4. Process Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Work with the engineering team to execute process trials, experiments, and DOEs (Design of Experiments).
  • Collect and organize process and quality data for analysis; suggest ideas to improve throughput, yield, and coating performance.
  • Follow defined SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and contribute to updating them as processes evolve.
  • Identify and communicate opportunities for improving safety, reliability, ergonomics, and ease of operation.

5. Documentation, Training & Collaboration

  • Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities, process changes, and experimental runs
  • Help develop and refine operating instructions, checklists, and troubleshooting guides for operators.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, materials, and automation engineers, and with the senior electromechanical technician who will mentor you.
  • Support training of additional operators as the team grows.

Qualifications Required

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in one of the following or related areas: Electromechanical Engineering, Mechatronics / Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Automation / Instrumentation & Controls, Electrical Engineering Technology
  • 0–3 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing, lab, or pilot plant environment (coating, printing, converting, film extrusion, or similar web-handling experience is an asset, but not required).
  • Demonstrated hands-on skills with basic mechanical and electrical tasks: using hand and power tools, basic wiring, mechanical assembly, alignment, etc.
  • Strong troubleshooting mindset and willingness to “get your hands dirty” on the equipment.
  • Comfortable working with computers, basic data logging, and learning new software tools.
  • High attention to detail and ability to follow procedures meticulously.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a small, fast-moving team.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada and work on-site in Waterloo.

Nice to Have (Assets)

  • Exposure to roll-to-roll processes such as printing presses, web coating, film extrusion, or converting lines.
  • Familiarity with PLCs (Beckhoff TwinCAT or similar), HMIs, or basic control logic (even from school projects).
  • Experience with pneumatic, hydraulic, or vacuum systems.
  • Comfort with woodworking and metalworking (e.g., building test fixtures, basic fabrication).
  • Exposure to Git/GitHub or other version control systems.
  • Interest in sustainability, advanced materials, and clean-tech manufacturing.

Who You Are

-Grit & Drive:  you take full ownership of your work and follow through until the job is done. You bring the  grit needed to troubleshoot complex hardware and software issues until they are solved. -Humble & Adaptable: you thrive in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift quickly. You are a humble, hands-on learner who recognizes there is always more to master, allowing you to adapt seamlessly to new machines, technologies, or team needs. -Dependable:  you are the teammate everyone can count on. You remain dependable under pressure, ensuring tasks are completed accurately and on time, regardless of the challenge.

What We Offer
