Description The Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Toronto, and Unity Health Toronto – St. Michael’s Hospital are seeking applications for a Clinician Scientist in Critical Care Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital-Unity Health Toronto. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment as an Intensivist at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The tentative start date of this appointment is September 1, 2026 (negotiable).
Unity Health Toronto is home to one of the most advanced adult Critical Care programs in Canada. The program brings world-leading innovation and research to the bedside to give patients the best possible care. The St. Michael’s Medical-Surgical ICU is well known locally and internationally for its expertise in caring for patients with severe respiratory failure, including critically ill patients with sepsis, acute inflammatory disorders and other complex medical diseases. The unit also provides post-operative care for many acutely ill surgical patients.
The successful candidate will be a nationally and internationally recognized clinician-scientist with an established research program in Critical Care and a very strong track record of research activity and success. The successful candidate will be joining a legacy of world-renowned researchers in critical care with a focus on acute lung injury, ARDS, mechanical ventilation, sepsis, and multi-organ failure, among other areas of clinical focus, including neurologic, cardiac and trauma critical care.
The successful applicant must hold a medical degree and FRCPC qualifications or equivalent, and be eligible for licensure in Ontario (CPSO) for Adult Critical Care Medicine. Candidates will be required to have completed graduate training at the doctoral (preferred) or masters level. Their research should be internationally recognized and align with the research priorities of Unity Health Toronto as a world class centre for mechanical ventilation and respiratory physiology research. A research focus on mechanical ventilation and platform clinical trial expertise and design will be prioritized.
Applicants will be evaluated by a Selection Committee according to University of Toronto and St. Michael’s Hospital policies. Consideration will be given to the applicant’s record of scholarly activity (including grants and awards, peer-reviewed publications, quality and safety program development, collaborations locally, nationally and internationally, supervision of graduate students and fellows and provision of quality and safety education at the graduate and post-graduate levels), clinical expertise, and contributions to the field.
Academic rank, salary, and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Compensation will depend on the amount of clinical work performed and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and within the usual range for an intensivist in the Province of Ontario, which exceeds $200,000 CAD per annum.
