We are seeking a Business Development Associate for our Sompo Canadian team in our Toronto, Ontario office. Job Summary:
The role of Business Development Associate is integral to elevating our corporate profile, effectiveness, and reputation by driving business development initiatives and coordinating with the local Underwriting team. The position will primarily focus on identifying strategic business opportunities, fostering broker relationships, and supporting underwriter and broker connectivity and production, while also managing event planning responsibilities.
Duties & Responsibilities: Business Development (70%):
- Support Sompo North America's financial and strategic goals by collaborating with the SVP Distribution – Canada.
- Develop a deep understanding of underwriting teams’ risk appetite and broker distribution strategies in Canada.
- Collaborate with SVP Distribution and Underwriting teams to optimize broker partnerships.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of sales activities and prospect interactions using Salesforce.
- Assist in providing regular sales reports, performance updates, and market insights to management.
- Assist in developing unique marketing plans, broker education initiatives (such as webinars), and tools to enhance underwriter and broker connectivity.
- Design and source custom branded corporate gifts, ensuring alignment with company brand guidelines (visually appealing and consistent).
Event Planning (30%):
- Assist in planning and executing events, including logistics, budgeting, vendor coordination, and on-site management.
- Handle event-related tasks such as travel logistics, staffing, invites, RSVP management, attendee registrations, and promotional item distribution.
- Manage third-party providers for events, including selection, contracting, and oversight of speakers, venues, catering, entertainment, and audio/visual logistics.
- Contribute to creative ideation, project management, and budget management for events.
- Develop and manage detailed project schedules and milestone checkpoints.
Qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s or college degree (BBA or hospitality-related degree preferred) or relevant experience.
- CIP designation is an asset.
- 3+ years of experience in corporate event planning and/or the insurance industry
- Understanding of event and conference contract terms and conditions
- Experience with business development technologies/Salesforce would be an asset
- Strategic problem-solving skills with strong analytical and decision-making capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously under pressure.
- Creative mindset with attention to detail.
- Exceptional customer service skills.
- French language proficiency (spoken and written) is an asset.
- Up to 10-20% travel may be required; must possess a valid passport and the ability to travel.
