Summary of Position

Reporting to the Program Manager, Access 365, the Nursing Consultant serves as a clinical educator and subject-matter expert dedicated to advancing clinical excellence, quality improvement and infection prevention and control standards. The Nurse Consultant will primarily be dedicated to the Access 365 Program for patients with semi-urgent health concerns; however they will also serve as the organizational Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) delegate.

Access 365 is a semi-urgent primary care program that provides same-day and next-day appointments to support timely patient care and maintain continuity with patients’ medical home. At Access 365, the Nurse Consultant serves as a nurse educator and provides leadership, mentorship and education to support a high-functioning interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, licensed practical nurses and medical office assistants. The position is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring standardized clinical processes, ensuring compliance with best practices and fostering a culture of continuous learning and operational excellence.

As the organization’s IP&C Delegate, the Nurse Consultant provides organizational oversight and coordination of infection prevention practices across Calgary Foothills Primary Care Network programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and acting as the primary contact during audits or reviews.

Key Responsibilities

Key aspects of the position may include, but are not limited to:

Clinic Operations and Optimization

  • Serves as the clinical team lead at Access 365, providing day-to-day support, mentorship and direction to regulated and non-regulated staff.
  • Acts as an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) superuser to troubleshoot workflow challenges, optimize templates and support integration of new electronic processes.
  • Supports vaccine, medication and blood-product reconciliation processes to maintain operational readiness.
  • Oversees supply management for the program, coordinating with Facilities team to ensure timely ordering and availability of equipment and materials required for clinic operations.

Education, Training and Mentorship

  • Functions as a nurse educator, mentoring staff in current procedures and evidence-based practice.
  • Designs, delivers and evaluates orientation and onboarding for new staff.
  • Develops and maintains quick-reference guides, procedure manuals and resources to ensure role clarity and process consistency across the interdisciplinary team.
  • Provides real-time clinical coaching, supporting licensed practical nurses (LPN) and medical office assistants in skill development and decision-making.
  • Leads targeted education on new protocols, documentation standards, and workflow changes.

Direct Care and Clinical Coordination

  • Provides direct patient care within the Registered Nurse scope of practice when the LPN is unavailable or when presentations have considerable clinical complexity.
  • Conducts focused assessments and delivers evidence-based care, coordinating follow-up care and patient education needed.
  • Contributes to the growth of Access 365’s clinical service offerings by identifying opportunities to expand care aligned with emerging needs and evidence-based practice.
  • Ensures accurate and timely EMR documentation in alignment with College of Registered Nurses of Alberta standards.

Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) Delegate

  • Acts as the designated individual responsible for IP&C best practices across PCN programs by ensuring alignment with regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services and infection prevention and control standards.
  • Coordinates IP&C related policies, procedures and staff training.
  • Ensures compliance with IP&C standards, participates in internal audits and serves as the point of contact during IP&C inspections.
  • Serves as the primary vaccine controller for the organization and supports related reporting.
  • Provides guidance to programs on outbreak response, surveillance and ongoing process improvements for infection control.

Quality Improvement and Patient Safety

  • Contributes to quality improvement initiatives to enhance workflow efficiency and patient safety.
  • Conducts clinical audits and data reviews to identify trends, gaps or opportunities for improvement.
  • Monitors referral patterns and provides follow-up with member clinics, Health Link, Foothills Medical Centre and other partners to ensure appropriate referrals and alignment with Access 365 inclusion criteria.
  • Promotes adherence to Calgary Foothills PCN quality standards and evidence-based care protocols.

Program and Process Development

  • Collaborates with leadership to plan, evaluate and implement new or expanded clinical services appropriate to the semi-urgent care model.
  • Drafts, reviews and maintains standardized clinical workflows, guidelines and forms.
  • Develops processes and documentation to support team clarity and consistency across Access 365.
  • Shares Access 365’s clinical and operational tools with other PCN programs and partners to strengthen quality and alignment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship abilities with a collaborative, team-based approach.
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical process design, workflow optimization and evidence-based practice.
  • Strong understanding of Infection Prevention and Control principles and regulatory standards.
  • Skilled in education and facilitation for regulated and non-regulated professionals in a clinical environment.
  • Proven ability to lead quality improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Proficient in clinical software (e.g. EMRs) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Organized, adaptable and able to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

  • Current registration and good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience, preferably in primary care, urgent care or ambulatory settings.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in clinical education, mentorship or operational coordination.
  • Proven experience in quality improvement and change management.
  • Completion of or a commitment to completing recognized IP&C training.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing is required; a Master’s degree in a related field is an asset
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily onsite at the Access 365 clinic, with occasional travel for training, collaboration or cross-program support.
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts including weekdays, evenings and weekends, based on operational need. One weekend in a four-week rotation is required.
