Stopping the Violence Outreach Counsellor
Native Healing Centre - Health Department
35 hrs a week / $32-34hr
The Stopping the Violence Outreach Counsellor will provide trauma-informed, culturally safe, and inclusive support to individuals experiencing or impacted by gender-based violence (GBV). This position will offer direct outreach, counselling, advocacy, crisis response, and emotional support to individuals while also supporting prevention initiatives and community healing. You will provide client-centered outreach and advocacy by assisting individuals with safety planning, navigating health, legal, housing, and social service systems, and connecting them with culturally relevant support and resources. The role will incorporate trauma-informed, strength-based, and harm reduction approaches to support individuals on their healing journeys. This position will be based out of the Healing Centre and will involve community outreach within Prince George.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma or Degree in Social Work, Human Services, Indigenous Studies, or a related field, with a combination of education and experience considered.
- Certification in or willing to obtain: First Aid, Class 4 Driver's License, Suicide Intervention, and Conflict Resolution.
- Ability to undergo a successful criminal record search.
- Experience supporting individuals impacted by trauma, crisis, or violence.
- Knowledge and understanding of processes to obtain Employment Insurance, Disability, GST.
- Understanding of the impacts of colonization, intergenerational trauma, and systemic barriers affecting Indigenous communities.
- Ability to motivate others towards achieving their personal goals.
- Ability to work independently with strong sense of focus, task-oriented, nonjudgmental, open-minded qualities, and a clear sense of boundaries.
- Ability to work in a variety of settings with culturally diverse families and communities with the ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate, mentoring participants within the context of their identity, family, community, tribe, history, culture, and traditions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A strong sense of and respect for confidentiality involving both participants and fellow employees.
Preference will be given to applicants of Canadian Indigenous ancestry. We encourage all candidates to self-identify. Our process is protected by the BC Human Rights Tribunal under Non-Profit Exemption.
