Position Summary Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer and President & CEO, the Director provides strategic leadership across key initiatives, analyses, and executive priorities, while engaging regularly with senior leaders on highly confidential and strategically significant matters. Overseeing relationship development, strategic planning and projects, executive forum support, policy development, and executive representation, the Director drives organizational strategy and key initiatives in collaboration with the CEO and Executive Team. The role includes developing annual goals, strategic proposals, balanced scorecards, and high-level reports, while also enhancing UHN’s reputation and brand profile and contributing to policy development for both UHN and the broader Ontario health system.
Duties

Lead strategic initiatives, analytical projects, and executive-level tasks on behalf of the President & CEO, providing strategic briefings, enterprise-level decision support, issue analysis, and advice on organizational, system, and policy matters.

Oversee five key portfolio areas:

Relationship advancement – manage internal and external communications, briefings, planning, agenda coordination, strategic opportunities, transitions, and key issues
-
Strategic projects and planning – support Board of Trustees initiatives in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Legal Officer.

Executive forum liaison – support the Executive Leadership Forum and Executive Outbreak Team goals.

Policy development – lead policy work for UHN and, where appropriate, the Ontario Health System.

Office of the CEO representation – act as an ambassador to ensure exemplary stakeholder experience and service.

Support enterprise-level strategy by partnering with the Chief Strategy Officer to design, execute, and refresh UHN’s multi-year Strategic Plan; lead enterprise-wide initiatives; and translate strategic priorities into executive-ready materials, roadmaps, milestones, and performance indicators.

Advance system strategy, policy, and government alignment, including developing system-level policy positions, submissions, and strategic advice; collaborating with Government Relations, Legal, and Executive leaders; and monitoring health system trends to inform decision-making.

Enable governance and executive effectiveness by supporting Board planning, coordinating content for committees and enterprise governance forums, and facilitating strategy flow between the Board, CEO, CSO, and Executive Leadership Forum.

Collaborate with the CEO and Executive Team on annual goals, strategic proposals, balanced scorecards, and ad hoc analytical reports.

Enhance UHN’s reputation and brand profile through consistent strategic communications.

Contribute to the development, review, and iteration of key policy documents relevant to UHN and the broader Ontario health system.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or a recognized equivalent.
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in health administration, strategic planning, and operational leadership.
- Demonstrated experience supporting enterprise-level strategy in a large, complex organization.
- Experience operating in close partnership with a Chief Strategy Officer, CEO, and senior executive committees.
- Expertise in developing, researching, and writing business proposals, policy documents, and strategic reports.
- Experience working with Boards of Trustees and navigating governance matters.
- Strong interpersonal skills, political acumen, and the ability to build trust, use diplomacy, and influence effectively.
- Proven ability to engage, develop, and lead staff across complex organizational structures.
- Skilled in process and project management, strategic thinking, and translating priorities into actionable initiatives.
- Ability to synthesize complex information into clear, executive-level insights for decision-makers and governance bodies.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity, managing competing priorities, and addressing high-stakes organizational issues.
- Strong working knowledge of computer systems and relevant software applications.
- Experience collaborating with senior levels of organizations, government, professional associations, and other stakeholders.
