The Opportunity
The City of St. John’s Recreation Division is currently seeking motivated, enthusiastic, and energetic individuals to work in a leadership role as a Head Lifeguard in our Summer Outdoor Aquatics Programs.
Accountabilities
Head lifeguards must be comfortable working in a leadership role providing program delivery and supervising the outdoor aquatics programs.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. The above statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job identified and shall not be considered a detailed description of all work requirements that may be inherent in the job.
Qualifications
- Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Pool Option
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience as a Lifeguard
- Experience as a Head Lifeguard in an aquatic setting would be an asset
- Experience in program planning and supervision of aquatic programs and activities
- Experience in the leadership and evaluation of staff
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
Other Requirements
- Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Record Screening Certificate AND Vulnerable Sector Check – Dated not more than six months prior to hire
- As per the Public Pool Regulations under the Public Health Act, active lifeguards must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
Additional Qualifications (Provided Free For Successful Candidates If Required)
- Standard First Aid with CPR-C
- High Five® Principles of Healthy Child Development Certification
Physical Requirements
These positions require physical agility and stamina to carry out required duties.
Hours of Work
- Up to 40 hours per week
- Position Start and End dates: June 25 - September 1, 2026.
- Must be available to attend mandatory training. First possible training date beginning June 9 and continuing throughout the month of June. Some training may be offered virtually, evenings and/or weekends.
- Training/program dates may vary based on assigned location.
