Position Summary

The Development Services Department, Planning Policy and Urban Design division is currently accepting applications to fill one (1) full-time, 4-month (May – August 2026) co-op opportunity. Reporting to the Director, Planning Policy and Urban Design, this position is responsible for providing support to planning staff.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Conducts research on planning and development issues supporting planning policy and urban design projects
  • Writes background documents, research summaries and analyses of best practice
  • Attends meetings and participates in group discussions
  • Takes notes and keeps records of meeting discussions
  • Supports the facilitation of community engagement activities
  • Conducts site visits and field research, in support of planning and development projects
  • Supports the Heritage Planning function
  • Assists in providing customer service support on planning and development inquiries
  • Complies with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental objectives

Education & Experience

  • Applicants must be a student enrolled in a graduate degree program (3rd or 4th year student) or a masters program in Community, Urban or Regional Planning or a discipline related to Planning
  • Knowledge and understanding of planning and development related issues in a municipal environment
  • Strong research and analytical skills and the ability to work independently on specific tasks
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of GIS and CAD are considered an asset
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Superior customer service skills
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s License with a driving record that demonstrates responsible/safe driving behavior as use of a personal vehicle is required

Government Administration

Milton is a town in Southern Ontario, Canada, and part of the Halton Region in the Greater Toronto Area. Between 2001 and 2011 Milton was the fastest growing municipality in Canada, with a 71.4% increase in population from 2001 to 2006 and another 56.5% increase from 2006 to 2011. In 2016, Milton's census population was 110,128 with an estimated growth to 228,000 by 2031. It remained the fastest growing community in Ontario but was deemed to be the sixth fastest growing in Canada at that time.
