Position Highlight: BC Hydro is embarking on one of the most significant transmission expansions in our history with the delivery of the new 500 kV North Coast Transmission (NCT) portfolio, which includes new high-voltage transmission lines and stations, upgrades to existing assets, and system integration work. This major infrastructure portfolio will strengthen grid reliability, support regional industrial growth, and enable clean electrification across the North Coast. As part of the NCT Engineering Division, you will play a key role in delivering this transformative infrastructure for the province. This position is for an Engineering Team Lead within the NCT Engineering Division in Transmission Engineering. The NCT Engineering Division brings together multi-discipline engineering design (including civil, mechanical, electrical, structural and geotechnical disciplines) and engineering services team members to deliver scope within roles both as Professional of Record and/or Owner’s Engineer.
The Engineering Team Lead will act as a functional manager to a diverse engineering team of engineers and technical staff delivering large scope and complex work on NCT Lines and/or Stations projects, providing technical leadership and accountable for focussed delivery of work packages under the NCT portfolio. Engineering Team Leads will model inclusive leadership and prioritize safety, ensuring designs and installation are safe, effective, and meet the requirements of BC Hydro.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who excels at team building and leading high-performing teams in a dynamic and collaborative project environment, working on a portfolio of projects, each with its own unique scope, assets, technical aspects, risks and stakeholders. While the work is based out of Burnaby, you’ll get to travel to BC Hydro’s facilities located throughout British Columbia and may occasionally travel to other parts of North America and internationally.
What you’ll do:

Provide leadership, support and advice to team members, encourage their work initiative, and help them grow as engineers and technical leaders. Demonstrates BC Hydro’s commitment to a diverse, respectful and inclusive workforce.

Manage execution of project deliverables by team members and provide technical support in resolving operational issues. Monitor schedule milestones / work package budget and conformance.

Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, provide safety leadership, and create a safety culture where safety is first and employees are recognized for safe performance and compliance with safety regulations and safe work practices. Ensures team members have applicable safety training for their work, the activities in the annual safety plan are completed, and team members perform their work safely.

Prepare or review technical reports, presentations, standards, specifications, guides, or other such documents that provide engineering expertise to project work. Provide general guidance and support for Owner’s Engineer work being delivered by team.

Ensure that qualified internal and external resources are available and have the required expertise and tools to optimally meet work plans. Allocate resources to various projects within the work portfolio; assign and coordinate work, and provide instructions, advice and technical guidance to other engineers, technical and administrative staff.

Work with the Division Manager to develop resource strategy, recruit, select, and promote staff, and/or procure consulting services. Develop and implement an employee development program to maintain/cultivate the required skills and expertise. Foster collaboration and knowledge transfer, coaching and mentoring, and organizational awareness. Facilitate the development of employee soft skills including persuasive influence, collaboration, and conflict resolution.

Collaborates, builds, and maintains relationships with other Engineering teams and NCT project team, as well as internal business groups including Asset Planning, Field Operations and external partners to advance the delivery of BC Hydro’s overall work plan.

Assist in the development of team and division objectives and performance measurements and manages the technical and operational performance of the team to meet these objectives and other business needs.

Assist in the development and enhancement of engineering processes and workflows, review procedures, and quality assurance practices. Ensure team adherence to BC Hydro and industry standards, policies, practices and procedures.

Advocate for professional practice and ensure team members are following the professional practice and development requirements, and their work complies with the Professional Governance Act and other Engineers and Geoscientists BC Quality Management Guidelines.

Proactively undertake and/or significantly contribute to problem identification, risk mitigation, and the development of customized solutions to complex engineering problems considering Safety by Design, value, benefit, and risk to BC Hydro.

Support the Division Manager on various initiatives. The Engineering Team Lead may support NCT or company-wide initiatives and be an active part in developing those initiatives.

Coach and mentor team members to investigate and analyze challenging or unusual technical problems, evaluate risks and develop solutions to problems.

Chair meetings to address engineering problems, attend and address seminars, courses, meetings, and conferences, and prepare and make presentations to various audiences.
What you bring:

Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.

10 + years progressive and comprehensive engineering experience in the transmission utility business including design standards, engineering and maintenance, technical report writing, and the ability to undertake technical design reviews.

Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC), or another Canadian Regulatory body. The individual shall be proficient with EGBC quality management guidelines, continuing education requirements and code of ethics.

Technical knowledge and experience in delivery of large overhead transmission lines and/or stations projects. General knowledge of various design codes, standards and design software.

Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, particularly technical writing and ability to communicate with clarity complex technical matters to technical and nontechnical audiences.

Demonstrated ability and passion in people management skills including conflict management, work leadership, technical direction, communication, team building, and coaching skills. Strong interpersonal skills required; ability to discuss issues and work to resolution with varied stakeholders and project team members.

Good understanding of project and task management processes. Ability to deliver in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Excellent organizational and management skills. Must be a self-starter.
