Clinical Coding Specialist Health Data and Coding
About the role
The Coding Specialist will be responsible for accurately coding, using ICD-10-CA/CCI, and abstracting clinical information from both inpatient records and outpatient records (emergency, day surgery, clinics) in accordance with national (CIHI) and provincial (MOHLTC) standards and reporting requirements. The Clinical Coding Specialist will continuously promote coding data quality and ensure accuracy and integrity of the information collected.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collects a predefined data set and applies the ICD-10-CA/CCI classification methodology for statistical and clinical data
- Abstracts data into 3M Health Data Management (HDM) software application using the 3M Encoder product
- Codes and abstracts for the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS) and Discharge Abstracting Database (DAD)
- Accurately reflects, through coding methodology, resource usage for cases
- Ensures quality and consistency in coding/abstracting cases
- Responsible for coding and abstracting Inpatient, Day Stay, Emergency and Outpatient visits as required
- Assigns appropriate diagnostic and intervention codes following Canadian Coding Standards
- Abstracts specialized data sets of information applicable to outpatient admissions
- Performs routine data quality audits and checks to ensure data quality and integrity
- Meets productivity and coding turn-around-times for data submission
- Attends educational seminars and conferences, as required, and for on-going self-development
- Participates on team huddles, committees and working groups, as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an approved Health Information Management Program
- Certified member of the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) in good standing
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Administration or other health discipline preferred
- Proven knowledge of ICD-10-CA/CCI coding nomenclature
- Proven knowledge of current DAD and NACRS Abstracting and Canadian Coding Standards
- Thorough understanding of ambulatory grouping and weighting methodologies (CACS)
- Be familiar with MOHLTC funding and reporting methodologies
- 2-3 years of previous medical coding/abstracting experience preferred
- Experience with specialized Health Records/Hospital applications including ADT, Electronic Clinical Data, 3M Encoder, Abstracting System
- Working knowledge of MS Office
- Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, within a team environment
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
- Must have an excellent attendance record
