Position Title: SENIOR ACCOUNTING CLERK

Reports to: Manager, Finance

Job Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Finance, the Senior Accounting Clerk is responsible for providing financial, administrative and clerical support to the Finance Department. This involves assisting in day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger data entry, reconciliation and audit preparation support. The Senior Accounting Clerk assists with ensuring that all financial processes comply with Haisla Nation policies, government regulations, and Indigenous funding agreements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Finance Administration:

  • Prepare and process financial documents (e.g. accounts payable and receivable) ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Review and verify transactions for accuracy and notify Manager of any discrepancies.
  • Complete all necessary banking, including reconciling monthly bank statements and deposits.
  • Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for internal and external stakeholders including auditors, and funding agencies.
  • Maintain and update the general ledger, ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately and in compliance with accounting standards.
  • Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping for all financial transactions.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance to accounting clerks to problem solve or escalate issues.
  • Provide direction and support on complex and time sensitive transactions.
  • Serve as a resource to Haisla Nation staff and managers on matters relating to Finance policies and procedures.
  • Participate on special projects or analysis as assigned to support financial decisions at Haisla Nation.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure the privacy and security of records.
  • Oversee general office and administrative duties, including reception, ordering office supplies, booking meetings, processing, and sending mail
  • Participate on committees and task forces as required.
  • Perform other tasks within scope of position as required.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant experience in accounting or financial administration.
  • Basic understanding of CRA Rules and Regulations
  • Proven knowledge of and ability to carry out financial procedures, i.e., data entry and financial controls and reporting
  • High proficiency with financial software and spreadsheets (Excel) and the ability to produce accurate financial reports.
  • High attention to detail and organization skills.
  • Strong relationship building skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Strong planning, time management skills with ability to be self-directed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, discretion and adherence to confidentiality requirements.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and various databases, search engines and Outlook/email.
  • Knowledge of First Nations Culture and working in a First Nation’s community is an asset.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Salary Range: $34.90/hr - 43.12/hr

Experience

Required

  • Understanding of CRA rules and financial reporting standards.
  • 1 - 3 years: Strong knowledge of financial processes, including AP/AR, reconciliations, and general ledger entries.

Preferred

  • Experience working in or with First Nations communities is an asset.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, communication, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • 1 year(s): Proficiency with financial software, Microsoft Excel, and other MS Office applications.

  • Bachelor's degree or better in Accounting or related field
