Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of the Centre for Applied Research, Technology and Innovation, the Senior Research Technician will assist with all aspects of lab and field research projects related to applied research, technology and innovation. This includes coordinating CARTI’s Seaweed Innovation Lab space and activities and fostering a collaborative, creative and inspiring research and learning atmosphere. The Senior Research Technician will coordinate the maintenance, Standard Operating Procedures, and use of CARTI equipment and infrastructure, including CARTI vehicles. The Senior Research Technician will also assist in the supervision of student researchers and maintain safety standards to align with best practices and relevant legal and policy frameworks.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, organize, implement and support remote, multi-day field research and lab experiments related to assigned research projects with NIC researchers, students and external partners.

  • Optimize field and lab research practices and processes for on-campus and mobile infrastructure and equipment and create Standard Operating Procedures to document and share those practices and processes.

  • Respond to internal (NIC) and external requests to access CARTI facilities and equipment, and provide support to bring research and innovation ideas to action.

  • Set up and run required experiments, activities and programs in the laboratory.

  • Maintain a safe, organized, collaborative and inspiring laboratory space.

  • Analyze data and provide data analysis support to internal (NIC) and external partners.

  • Supervise and train student research assistants and volunteers, assisting in safe and appropriate use of equipment and supporting student learning goals.

  • Thoughtfully incorporate and contribute to CARTI and NIC policies, protocols and initiatives in support of truth, reconciliation, Indigenization and decolonization.

  • Contribute to CARTI’s community and culture: participate in CARTI, NIC and community meetings and events; develop knowledge mobilization materials for said meetings and events; and further CARTI’s reputation for excellence in collaborative research and innovation.

  • Maintain an inventory of infrastructure, equipment and lab space and a schedule of its use and maintenance

  • Ensure all equipment is maintained with regular cleaning, maintenance, and calibration as needed.

  • Update safety procedures on an annual basis or more frequently if required and ensure compliance with all safety procedures, including those from CARTI, NIC and WHMIS.

  • Maintain regular contact with internal (NIC) and external partners and collaborators to ensure project success and positive working relationships.

  • Prepare purchase requisitions for required equipment and supplies.

  • Conduct literature reviews and assemble background information for research projects and funding proposals.

  • Ensure that research partners’ intellectual property and sensitive information is always protected.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Research and Innovation Leads and CARTI Manager.

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required in biology, environmental science, geography, or other related discipline of research projects.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working on collaborative field and lab applied research projects including following/developing SOPs and supervisory experience.

  • Preferred experience working directly with Indigenous businesses, organizations and/or communities.

  • Experience building and/or maintaining a collaborative, engaging, inspiring, safe and impactful research and learning environment.

  • Recent experience and familiarity with industry safety and sector-appropriate protocols.

  • Must be willing to obtain additional required safety and training certificates as necessary to comply with the College’s safety plan and other requirements

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, including the ability to contribute efficiently, effectively, respectfully and creatively to team endeavours.

  • Knowledge of research methods and ability to ensure and document a rigorous research process.

  • Strong project management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of large and multi-stakeholder projects.

  • Must be willing and able to work with minimal supervision & direction.

  • Must be flexible and respond to change in a positive manner.

  • Travel may be required.
