As a Groundman 1 (Night Shift), you will be part of a dedicated team responsible for supporting the safe and efficient movement of over-dimensional loads through the City of Calgary. This operational role plays a key part in ensuring public and crew safety during transport activities. This position is scheduled for evening shifts, Monday through Thursday, offering a consistent night shift routine. Primary duties include:

  • Manually rotate traffic signal structures to allow high loads to pass safely through signalized intersections.
  • Conduct tailboard meetings, safety inspections, and permit checks to ensure safe operations and regulatory compliance.
  • Use hand tools to assemble and disassemble various traffic signal components.
  • Pre-scout routes to identify potential infrastructure conflicts.
  • Contribute to ongoing safety and process improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain an organized storage area and ensure parts inventory is properly stocked.
  • Operate machinery such as forklifts and picker trucks.

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of related experience; or 1 year of experience as a Signals Groundman 1.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or pending charges is required.
  • A valid Class 3 with Q Endorsement is considered an asset.
  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) is considered an asset.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with previous signals experience.
  • Success in this position requires excellent communication skills and initiative; the ability to use caution and exercise sound judgement with regards to safety and work site hazards.
  • Successful applicants must successfully complete all City of Calgary training provided.

Working Conditions: Employees will be required to work in all types of weather (rain, snow, heat or extreme cold) with heavy lifting and physical activity involved.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Compensation: $33.36 - 41.19 per hour

Days of Work: This position works a non-standard work week.
