Animal Care Attendant

As an Animal Care Attendant, you will serve as the primary caregiver for stray and seized animals, ensuring they receive the highest standard of care during their stay. This role is vital to our community, providing a safe and healthy environment for animals while supporting public safety and health protocols. As an Animal Care Attendant, you are responsible for the daily health, cleanliness, and enrichment of all animals housed at the ACCC. Your day-to-day work involves rigorous cleaning and sanitization of kennels to prevent disease transmission, alongside feeding and monitoring the physical well-being of dogs, cats, and various other species. Beyond animal care, you will maintain the facility’s grounds and interior to ensure a safe environment for both the animals and the public. You will work closely with Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) and Veterinarians, assisting with animal transfers and, when necessary, supporting the euthanasia process. This position requires resilience, as you will navigate emotionally charged situations and physically demanding tasks. Ultimately, your work ensures that every animal in our care is treated with dignity and compassion.
What will you do?
- Provide daily care, feeding, and water to all animals in the facility while ensuring specific dietary needs are met
- Perform deep cleaning and routine spot-cleaning of kennels, hallways, and animal housing areas following strict disease control protocols
- Monitor animal health and behavior, reporting any concerns such as illness or distress to the veterinary team
- Facilitate animal enrichment through walking, social interaction, and providing toys and treats
- Assist veterinary staff with animal transfers, medical procedures, and euthanasia when required
- Maintain the facility by removing snow, sanding icy patches, and ensuring outdoor spaces are free of debris
- Manage laundry and dishwashing tasks to ensure a constant supply of clean bedding and sanitized feeding equipment
- Perform minor repairs to animal traps and general facility maintenance as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Completion of Grade 10
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working in animal care
- Proven experience handling dogs, cats, and other animals in a professional setting
Assets:
- Previous experience working in a shelter environment, veterinary clinic, or boarding kennel
- Experience with the Google Workspace portfolio for basic administrative tasks
Skills required for success:
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting animal body language (canine and feline)
- Strong time management skills to balance multiple tasks in a fluctuating work volume
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, for reporting and team collaboration
- Ability to follow complex written and verbal instructions accurately
- Resilience and the ability to manage compassion fatigue in an emotionally demanding role

Conditions of Employment:
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton; there may be a cost associated with this requirement
- Possession of Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
- Applicants may be tested
Work Environment:
- Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
- Shift work requirements: This position requires four 10 hour shifts a week. The Animal Care & Control Centre is open 6 days a week, 7 AM - 6:30 PM including weekends. Evening and weekend work is required
- This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings
- Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, vibrations, chemicals, and odours may occur
- Requires maintaining awkward or constrained physical positions for prolonged periods
- Requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, and lifting items up to 50lbs
