Description

Full-time

Bow Valley (Canmore & Banff)

Remote-friendly, but you need to be of this place

The short version

We're hiring the person who will edit our journalists' articles, break our biggest stories, and own the publication that lands in 20,000+ inboxes three mornings a week. It's part reporter, part editor. If you can report fast, edit sharp, and use AI for way more than just searching for info, keep reading.

About Bow Valley Insider

Bow Valley Insider is a digital news publication sent to 20,000+ Canmore and Banff locals, plus Calgary weekenders, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7AM. We're the largest digital media company in the region, with 1.5 million+ emails sent and 22 million+ social media views over the past year.

What You'll Actually Do

There are three parts to it, and you own all three

Report and break the news (5 stories a week - non-negotiable)

Your core deliverable is five stories per week.

Most of these are breaking news: fast-turnaround stories where you're chasing sources, lining up expert commentary, and getting it published inside 24 hours (often the same day). When there isn't a full slate of breaking news in a given week, you fill the gap from a pipeline of bigger stories you've been developing over one to two weeks. These are the pieces that need more digging, more coordination, more care.

Run the newsroom (assign, guide, and edit what we publish)

You're the point person for our journalists. You assign stories, answer their questions, and edit their work. If it goes live on our website, you're the one who shaped it and signed off on it. You set the bar for accuracy, clarity, and local relevance - and you hold the line on it.

We'll walk you through our team structure and workflow, but the short version: the quality of what we publish is your responsibility.

Own the digital publication (Mon / Wed / Fri, 7AM)

Our digital publication is the product for most of our audience. You lead every edition. That means taking the long-form stories from our website and repurposing them into our digital publication using our established format and voice, then rounding out each edition with the other pieces our readers show up for - events, community tidbits, and the things that make it feel like a neighbour sharing something cool rather than a newswire feed.

Three editions a week, out the door by 7AM. You're the one who makes that happen, every time. We have a content assistant who uploads it to our email platform, but you're the one submitting the final draft to them in a Google Doc.

Note: That Monday edition usually means a couple of hours on Sunday night to build and polish it so it's ready to land first thing.

The AI Part. Read This Bit Twice

We are an AI-forward newsroom, and this is not a bolt-on. The person in this seat needs to be genuinely ahead on AI - at the front of it, not catching up to it.

To be clear about what we don't mean: 'I use ChatGPT to tidy up my grammar' is not being ahead on AI. That's table stakes, and honestly it's a bit 2023 of you. We want someone who has built AI into how they source, research, verify, produce, and ship - someone with a real workflow and real opinions about what these tools are good and bad at. You'll be setting the standard for how our whole team works with AI, so you need to be the sharpest person in the room on it.

If you're anti-AI, or you're still treating it like a novelty, this isn't your role. No hard feelings.

How We'll Measure Success

The reporting output is there, consistently - the five-a-week backbone holds

What we publish is accurate, clear, and genuinely worth reading Every edition of the digital publication ships on time, three mornings a week Our journalists do their best work because of how you assign, guide, and edit Our AI-enabled workflow keeps getting faster and sharper under your leadership

Compensation

This is a full-time role with an annual salary of $65,000-$75,000, based on experience. On top of that, if you already live in the Bow Valley or you already work in news, journalism, or content marketing in the Bow Valley, we'll add a signing bonus to your offer. Happy to walk you through the details on a call.

Why This Role Matters

Bow Valley Insider is how locals find out what's happening in their own backyard. This is the person who protects that trust and pushes the whole thing forward - the reporting, the newsroom, and the publication people open first thing three mornings a week. Get this right and you're not just filling a job. You're shaping the most-read news source in the Bow Valley.

Qualifications

Who You Are

You're a strong reporter and a strong editor. You can do the job and raise everyone else's. You can turn around a clean, accurate, genuinely interesting story on a tight clock, and you can spot the difference between a piece that's ready and a piece that just looks ready. You're organized enough to keep a team and a three-times-a-week publication running without dropping a deadline. You're curious about the Bow Valley and plugged into what people here actually care about.

What You Bring

Solid reporting and news-writing chops, with fast, accurate turnaround

Real editing experience. You make other people's work better, not just cleaner A genuine, demonstrable AI workflow that goes well beyond drafting and copy-editing The organizational discipline to ship a newsletter on schedule Strong sourcing and interviewing instincts Deep familiarity with Canmore, Banff, and the Bow Valley - its people, issues, and rhythms

Nice to Haves

Prior experience at a local or regional newsroom (Bow Valley or Alberta a bonus)

Newsletter or digital-publication production experience A journalism or communications background (helpful, not required - we care what you can do) Experience managing or mentoring a team

How To Apply

We don't do resumes or cover letters. They're usually AI slop and they tell us nothing about how you actually think and work.

Instead, record a 3-5 minute video and tell us three things

Your background as a journalist and/or editor. Your connection to the Bow Valley and why this place, why you. How you actually use AI in your work. Go past the obvious stuff. 'I draft with it' or 'I copy-edit with it' won't cut it. Show us the interesting, real ways you've built AI into how you report and produce.

Then send one writing sample - your single best piece, published or unpublished. One link. Pick your strongest.

Email your video and writing sample - stating you found this job on Jeff Gaulin's Journalism Job Board - to:
