SUMMARY – Shunter
Shift: Monday to Friday 16:00-01:00. (Fulltime)
Job Duties:
- Operates shunt vehicles within the confines of the exterior worksite
- Locates the required trailers in the yard
- Park trailers in locations where they are safe and readily available
- Ensures that trailers are moved to locations on-premises to allow for loading, unloading, parking, or maintenance, ensuring the appropriate trailer is moved to the appropriate dock/location and reefers are set to the correct temperatures.
- Assists in and ensures the safe flow of traffic in the work site and parking area
- Receives and relays information to or supervisor
- Keeps supervisor aware of which trailers are ready to move out, which have been moved etc.
- Performs pre-trip inspection on trailers and sets reefers to assigned temperature
- Monitors vehicle performance and mechanical fitness
- May be required to perform brake adjustments and other minor repairs (although generally completed by the mechanic)
- Demonstrates professionalism in customer service
- Assesses basic daily running functions of shunt vehicles (gas, oil, tires, brakes, etc)
- Unloading and loading inbound and outbound units timely, and identifying freight correctly.
- Confirming reefer temperatures are correct and probing freight if there are discrepancies.
- Recording OSD ( Over, Short, Damaged Freight ) creating exception reports and taking pictures if required.
- Counting freight accurately.
- Completing required paperwork accurately
Job requirements, knowledge & skills :
- Class 1 with Shunt experience.
- At least a year of experience in safely and effectively operating a sit-down counterbalanced forklift.
- Willing to work in multi-temperature environments.
- Must complete a standard road evaluation demonstrating knowledge of the vehicle and ability to safely operate the vehicle (Pre-Trip, Air Brake, Coupling & Un-Coupling, Road Test & Backing Exercise, etc.)
- Must possess awareness and demonstrated knowledge of workplace safety, safety procedures, and the importance of safe driving practices
- Prior experience shunt driving handling freight, using pallet jack and/or forklift an asset
- Must have certification or be able to complete Dangerous /Hazardous Goods training and Forklift operation training to obtain and maintain certification
- Must be willing and able to work in all weather conditions
- Must have a valid Class 5 license
- Must be physically able to move up to 50 to 80 lbs (on heavy manual material handling tasks, teamwork will be provided)
Working Condition:
- Uncontrollable external environmental conditions
- A portion of this position is performed in an outside environment regardless of the weather
- Work in multi-temperature environments
