As a Junior Operator, you will take direction from senior operators and work in collaboration with other operators, groups and interested parties. You will provide a supporting role that completes a wide variety of labour and general maintenance work. Primary duties include:

  • Assist the Intermediate Operator in performing "hands on" operation of treatment plant equipment (such as: pumps, valves and set points).
  • Monitor computer control systems to determine system status, control various plant processes, and shut down plant sections in response to emergencies.
  • Receive and store plant chemicals, change chemical containers, position totes and bags in operational position, and complete chemical inventories.
  • Provide support in operating control valves manually that control sections of the plant, including: pre-treatment, residuals treatment, de-chlorination systems, and filter beds.
  • Control and optimize filter-bed performance using computer controls while completing visual inspections and troubleshooting system upsets, refereeing usual results to Senior Plant Operators.
  • Produce potable water meeting internal City of Calgary standards and as outlined by Alberta Environmental (AENV) Approval to Operate.
  • Train for and relieve at higher operating levels, as necessary.

Qualifications

  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED).
  • At least 1 year of post-secondary education in a field related to water or wastewater treatment, or the equivalent 45 Continued Education Units (equivalent to 1 year of full-time study), as recognized by Alberta Environment is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, or a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, with no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who possess an Alberta (or provincial equivalent) Environmental Certificate of Qualification in Water Treatment.
  • A completed certificate from a 1 or 2 year, full-time study program in a related field will be considered an asset.
  • Success in this position requires attention to detail and the ability to communicate effectively.

Working Conditions: This position works in a water treatment plant, where Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required. Work is physically demanding and involves working in difficult conditions and inclement weather. This position also operates equipment (such as an overhead crane) and works with chemicals.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
