Auditor General
About the role
Inaugural Auditor General
Peel Region serves more than 1.5 million residents and approximately 200,000 businesses in Brampton, Caledon, and Mississauga and delivers a wide range of resident focused services across the Region. Rapid population growth, and commercial development have transformed what was primarily a rural area of farms and villages into a dynamic blend of urban, industrial, and residential areas. Peel is known for its large and vibrant newcomer community, with the highest percentage of racialized individuals in the GTA at 69% (2021). Peel Region’s 20-year vision is “Community for Life”, where everyone enjoys a sense of belonging and has access to the services and opportunities they need to thrive throughout each stage of their lives.
On June 12, 2025, Peel Regional Council approved the establishment of an independent Office of the Auditor General (AGO) for the Region of Peel. This strategic move reflects Council’s commitment to enhancing transparency, strengthening financial oversight, and identifying operational efficiencies. Reporting directly to Council, the Inaugural Auditor General will play a pivotal role in supporting Council’s accountability for the stewardship of public funds and the delivery of value-for-money services. As the founding leader of the AGO, the Auditor General will be responsible for building the office, including staffing, developing administrative policies and procedures, establishing audit methodologies, and setting professional standards. The role also involves cultivating effective relationships with Council, Regional leadership, and the public. The Auditor General is empowered to conduct financial (excluding attest), compliance, and performance audits across all Regional departments, Local Boards, the offices of the Regional Chair and Council members, and Peel Region controlled corporations.
The ideal candidate will possess a university degree, a recognized professional accounting designation, and a minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in auditing—preferably within municipal, provincial, or federal government environments. You bring deep expertise in audit principles, practices, and standards, honed through leadership roles in large, complex organizations. Known for your integrity, strategic thinking, and collaborative approach, you are a results-oriented leader with exceptional analytical, communication, and business planning skills. You are energized by the opportunity to shape a new office and are motivated by the challenge of leading audit functions in a dynamic, multi-stakeholder, and unionized environment.
