The Public Art Conservator plays a critical role in preserving and protecting a diverse public art collection. This position ensures artworks remain safe, stable, and accessible through expert conservation planning, treatment, and oversight across their full life cycle. Working collaboratively across departments and with external partners, the Conservator applies best practices to both existing and newly commissioned public artworks. Primary duties include:
- Assess, document, and monitor the condition of artworks, preparing detailed condition reports and maintaining records in the collections management system.
- Plan, perform, and oversee conservation and restoration treatments, including research, testing, treatment proposals, and documentation.
- Provide preventative conservation guidance for new public art commissions, including design reviews, risk assessments, and quality assurance throughout fabrication and installation.
- Provide project management for conservation and restoration projects including: developing specifications, leading the procurement and contracting of contractors and consultants, overseeing project delivery, reviewing deliverables and conducting quality inspections.
- Conduct quality assurance inspections for internal and contracted work, ensuring compliance with conservation, health and safety requirements.
- Coordinate and respond to conservation needs in the field, including graffiti removal, maintenance issues, and emergency preparedness activities.
- Review artwork sites and facilities to evaluate environmental and display conditions and recommend improvements to support long-term preservation.
- Liaise across departments with asset owners, artists, fabricators, and consultants to integrate conservation best practices into City infrastructure and projects.
- Support training, guidance, and technical expertise for staff and colleagues involved in collections care, maintenance, and documentation.
Qualifications
- A Master's degree or equivalent in Art Conservation with a specialization in objects and or sculptures.
- At least 3 years of practical experience working with a mixed art collection and preferably with public art.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, or a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, with no current suspensions or charges pending and Access to a personal vehicle for business use is required.
- Demonstrated Project Management skills would be considered an asset.
- Success in this position requires well developed communication and relationship building skills, as well as a strong health and safety focus.
- Ability to work well both collaboratively across a team and independently towards clearly defined outcomes and deliverables is required.
Pre-employment Requirements
- A security clearance will be conducted.
- Applicants may be asked to bring in a portfolio demonstrating their work.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Workstyle
- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Compensation: Pay Grade 12 $48.54- 64.88 per hour
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
