About the role

ABOUT THE JOB

The Home Support Worker provides personal care and home management services to individuals with diverse abilities in their homes. The role promotes physical, emotional, and social well-being, ensures safety through observation and reporting, and follows agency protocols. The main responsibilities include:

  • Monitors the overall well-being of the individual and reports any changes
  • Provides personal care, including feeding, grooming, personal hygiene, etc.
  • Manages household duties such as budgeting, removing garbage, laundry, shopping, housekeeping, etc.
  • Provides life skills support and development
  • Fosters healthy eating habits through planning and preparing meals.
  • Transports individuals to appointments and other places
  • Implements the agency's health and safety standards while working with the individuals
  • Ensures that the individuals' behavioral plans are followed
  • Collaborates with other professionals, co-workers, and supervisors

  • Interior Community Services is a Municipal Pension Plan (MPP) employer. Part-time employees' entitlement to MPP is determined based on the length of service and accrued wages. If the candidate is already a contributing member, then enrollment is on hire.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

  • Home Support or Health Care Aide Certificate
  • Minimum one (1) year related experience working with individuals with diverse abilities and varying complex needs
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Demonstrated knowledge and strong abilities to:

  • Interact effectively and build rapport with individuals with diverse abilities
  • Recognize, analyze, and deal effectively and proactively with difficult behaviours
  • Handle crisis situations effectively using appropriate interventions
  • Work independently and as a member of a team
  • Problem-solve effectively and make ethical decisions
  • Document and report information in written format
  • Manage conflicts effectively and maintain positive working relationships with all parties involved
  • Provide person-centered services in a professional and creative way
  • Advocate for people with diverse abilities within the community
  • Show utmost care for the confidentiality and privacy of information

REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License
  • A safe driving record (abstract)
  • Own reliable vehicle insured with Business Use/ $5 Million third-party liability. (reimbursement provided)
  • Physical requirements of the job include supporting individuals in wheelchairs, or walkers, lifting, transferring, using lifts appropriately, pushing, pulling, bending, and assisting clients safely in and out of vehicles, etc. (Necessary on-the-job training is provided to ensure the safety of the participant and worker.)
  • Following training is required and provided to the successful candidate free of charge. Existing certification is an asset: CPR-C, Mandt-RC, Safe Food Handling, Medication Management, CLBC Privacy, Anti-Bullying, and Harassment.
  • This position requires Union membership, and 1.85% union dues are deducted from each pay.
  • A background check through the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General is required.

PROGRAM: Community Living Services - Home Support

LOCATION: Merritt, BC

STATUS: Part-Time

HOURS of WORK: 12 hours per week

SCHEDULE: Monday to Friday, Daytime schedule

REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator

COMPENSATION: $25.95 - $29.76 per hour (Grid 10 as per collective agreement)
