Post-Doctoral Fellow Position
CFD Modelling of Condensation from a Steam-Air Mixture Including Aerosol Transport and Deposition

A post-doctoral fellow position is available in the field of computational fluid dynamics, starting on June 1, 2021 or as soon thereafter as possible. The position has a duration of 24 months. The successful candidate will become part of an active CFD group working on a variety of in-house code development and commercial code application projects. The annual salary will be in the range of CAD$35k to $40k including benefits, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The project will involve CFD modelling of condensation along with aerosol transport in a steam-air mixture. A crucial part of the modelling will be aerosol deposition by thermophoresis and diffusiophoresis in the presence of strong condensation on a vertical surface. This modelling will be developed using commercial CFD code STAR CCM+. Extensive use of parallel computing is planned, with access to a high-performance computing environment. Careful verification of the model components will be required, as well as validation of the full model through comparisons with extensive experimental data to be made available exclusively to this project. The project will provide interaction with experienced research scientists in the Canadian nuclear engineering industry. The work is to be carried out in the CFD Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Manitoba. The applicant may work virtually, depending on travel restrictions.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will produce required literature reviews and summaries, will take the lead role in developing and testing the new models, will work with the industrial partner regarding the analysis and use of the experimental data, will document the results in summary technical reports journal article manuscripts, and will supervise research assistants.
Qualifications:
The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering and a strong background in CFD, aerosol transport, and advanced fluid mechanics and heat transfer. The candidate must also have demonstrated significant experience using a commercial CFD code and in writing and publishing articles in peer-reviewed respected academic journals. The candidate is expected to be curious, highly motivated, passionate, and have the ability to work independently and adhere to self-imposed deadlines. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are essential. The following will be considered assets and give applicants higher priority: significant experience using STAR CCM+, experience modelling condensation, experience modelling aerosol transport.
