About the Project

The Access to Justice Education Initiative is a national project funded by the Canadian Bar Association Law for the Future Fund. It responds to longstanding calls from the legal profession and access to justice advocates to enhance teaching in that area and better prepare law students and legal professionals to meet the needs of underserved communities.

Despite growing awareness of access to justice challenges in Canada, legal education remains uneven in its treatment of this issue. This initiative aims to address this disparity. Through research, collaboration, and the development of open-access educational materials, the project will identify core competencies for people-centred access to justice lawyering, support their integration into curricula across the country, and develop an independent course to fill the gaps. The ultimate goal is to develop a certification that would be awarded to students upon completion of specific milestones in access to justice within their program.

The project is led by a team of legal scholars across the country.
