Unity Health Toronto’s Education Portfolio leads the development and delivery of evidence-based, technology-enabled education programs that support workforce capability, quality of care, and organizational priorities. The TIDES Program operates at the intersection of education and workplace safety, translating safety priorities into education strategy, curriculum, and implementation to support a coordinated, system-wide approach to trauma-informed de-escalation and staff and patient safety.
The Manager, TIDES Education Program, is a leadership role within Unity Health Toronto’s Education Portfolio, providing strategic leadership, subject matter expertise, curriculum oversight, and operational leadership for trauma-informed de-escalation and crisis intervention education across the organization. The Manager is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the structures, partnerships, and supports required to deliver a high-impact, system-wide training program focused on staff and patient safety.
As a subject matter expert, the Manager contributes to and influences organizational policies, practices, and education standards related to trauma-informed care and safety. The role includes leading consultations on complex patient and staff scenarios, supporting interprofessional education, and collaborating closely with clinical, education, simulation, and operational stakeholders across Unity Health. The Manager also represents Unity Health Toronto as a leader in trauma-informed education, advancing system-level approaches that prioritize staff and patient safety and reflect best practices in technology-enabled and evidence-based education.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide overall leadership, direction, and operational oversight for the TIDES team, ensuring alignment with Unity Health Toronto’s education, safety, and organizational priorities.

Contribute to the Education Leadership Team as a member of the program’s leadership structure through input of ideas and feedback on initiatives that support priority areas.

Lead the development and successful implementation of the TIDES annual work plan in alignment with Unity Health Toronto’s organizational and safety priorities:
-
Identify work plan implementation challenges, delays, and risks as they arise, and propose follow-up actions and solutions.
-
Support the development of the TIDES work plan, integrating multiple projects and core functions to ensure organizational safety goals and objectives are met and service delivery outcomes are achieved.

Work across Unity Health Toronto portfolios and collaborate with executive and senior leadership to ensure TIDES mandatory training requirements are developed and achieved for Unity Health staff, including direct service staff, indirect service staff, physicians, leaders, students, and contractors:
-
Identify competencies for different staff groups.
-
Create curriculum and implementation plans and measure impact.
-
Work with a diverse stakeholder group, including individuals with lived experience, to ensure equity and inclusion principles are embedded and that training is relevant to the diverse Unity Health workforce.

Develop and chair the TIDES governance structure to ensure continuous improvement of the program to meet the needs of Unity Health Toronto staff. Lead the development of roles, responsibilities, and train-the-trainer programs for:

Point-of-care Facilitators (POCFs) - clinical staff and leaders who focus on bringing TIDES training into clinical environments.

Lived Experience Advisors (LEAs) - external contractors who identify as having lived experience and focus on facilitating TIDES training to bring the patient and family voice to the forefront
-
Lead the development of online learning resources and provide final approval of products related to TIDES and related programming.

Develop partnerships with Quality Improvement, Business Intelligence, Health, Safety and Wellness, Professional Practice, and Clinical Leadership to ensure the collection and analysis of information — and the dissemination of results — inform coordinated initiatives to address staff and patient safety challenges, with or without training components.

Engage senior and executive leadership to identify needs, adapt and tailor TIDES curriculum, identify required practice and policy development areas, and report on outcomes.
-
Develop work plans and deliverables in consultation with diverse stakeholders to ensure external TIDES training is delivered on budget and on time.
-
Lead and perform readiness and capacity assessments for external organizations to determine readiness for TIDES implementation and provide general recommendations related to risk and protective factors for staff and patient safety.
-
Develop and oversee evaluation frameworks to assess training effectiveness, competency development, and impact on staff and patient safety outcomes.
-
Ensure TIDES programming aligns with Accreditation Canada requirements, quality improvement plans, workplace violence prevention indicators, and organizational safety priorities.

Establish systems and processes for the collection, analysis, and reporting of quantitative and qualitative data related to mandatory training compliance, program outcomes, and continuous improvement.
-
Collaborate with Workplace Health, Safety and Wellness to integrate education data with safety metrics, incident trends, and organizational reporting requirements.
-
Recruit, onboard, supervise, and performance-manage TIDES staff, including educators, coordinators, and facilitators, in accordance with Unity Health Toronto people practices and collective agreements.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in education or business administration or equivalent
-
Regulated Health Professional, required
-
Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership and management experience in healthcare, education, safety, quality, or a related field
-
Demonstrated expertise in trauma informed care, de escalation, crisis intervention, workplace violence prevention, or staff and patient safety education
-
Experience leading complex, multi site education programs or system wide initiatives in a large healthcare or public-sector organization
-
Proven experience in program planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement
-
Strong experience in stakeholder engagement, partnership development, and working across clinical, operational, and corporate portfolios
-
Experience managing teams in unionized and/or highly regulated environments preferred
-
Experience working with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational safety or quality frameworks preferred
-
In depth knowledge of trauma informed principles, de escalation strategies, and best practices related to staff and patient safety
-
Strong understanding of adult learning theory, competency-based education, and curriculum design, including in person, virtual, hybrid, and simulation supported learning

Demonstrated leadership and people management skills, including coaching, performance management, and team development
-
Strong change management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in complex environments
-
Financial and operational management skills, including budget planning, monitoring, and resource allocation

Ability to analyze and interpret data to inform decision making, evaluation, and continuous improvement
