About the role
###The Role
We're looking for a high-energy, KPI-driven Operations Manager to run our print production facilities. This is a hands-on leadership role, not a desk job. You'll be on the floor, traveling to our other locations, resolving complex issues before they reach the executive team, and building a team that's motivated, accountable, and constantly improving.
The right person has a strong background in print manufacturing, knows how to get results through people, and genuinely believes there's always a better way to do things.
###What You'll Do
**Lead & Hold Accountable:**You don't just delegate; you follow up. You will manage a diverse production team, setting clear expectations and holding individuals accountable for quality and pace. Policy and Procedure Enforcement is carried out with diplomatic, yet effective execution. Your experience in leading people allows you to manage them clearly and respectfully. You get things done through people. Streamlining communication by following the chain of command and understanding the organization structure and job duties is key.
**Drive Production Performance:**You own daily output targets and oversee the full workflow from prepress to shipping. This includes developing SOPs for new and existing processes, and enforcing them consistently across the floor.
**Optimize Capacity:**You take ownership and understanding that an e-commerce environment is where demand shifts quickly, staying ahead of that is critical. This includes managing shift scheduling and labor allocation, making sure capacity is matched to order volume. You ensure staffing, schedules and machine run-time meet production demands.
**Eliminate Waste:**You identify and eliminate Muda waste as described in 5S Lean Manufacturing. You optimize labour hours, workflow, cost of carrying inventory levels, while reducing time-waste, rework, reprint, material waste, machine downtime (underutilization). Identify inefficiencies and make corrective actions.
**Process Improvement and Cost Control:**You identify labour inefficiencies, workflows, materials or process costs differences that affect variance analysis. You analyze “true-costs” by uncovering direct and indirect costs of in-house production.
**Allocate Resources Optimally:**You implement resource allocation and increase profitability without compromising quality. Your attention to detail allows you to break down expenses of labour, materials, overhead to identify areas of improvement (loss prevention strategies).
**Direct Maintenance Schedules:**You train, implement and audit strict predictive and preventative machine maintenance schedules as part of Loss Prevention Strategies aimed at reducing quality issues, machine downtime, repair costs and optimize workflow process.
**Hiring and Workforce Planning:**You are involved in hiring decisions and headcount planning, helping to build a team with the right skills and capacity as the business grows.
**Quality Control:**You own quality across all production stages. That means maintaining standards, managing rework and reprint processes, and making sure issues are identified, addressed, and don't repeat. Apply Six Sigma principles.
**Act as the Operational Buffer:**You are the first point of escalation for complex issues on the floor. Resolve them and report back to leadership with outcomes, not just problems.
**Health and Safety:**You maintain a safe working environment and ensure the facility stays compliant with health and safety requirements, including WorkSafeBC standards and other regulations in other jurisdictions.
**Champion Continuous Improvement:**You build a culture of Lean Manufacturing and process improvement throughout the plant. Regularly evaluate how work gets done, spot inefficiencies, and implement changes. Knowledge of 5S, Kaizen, and Lean methodologies are strong assets.
**Manage Inventory, Supply Chain and Vendor Relationships:**You oversee inventory, logistics, and supplier accountability. Negotiate contract terms and consumable pricing, evaluate new vendors, and hold existing ones accountable to their commitments. If a supplier isn't delivering, that's your problem to address.
**Oversee Special Projects and Infrastructure:**You manage machinery installation and facility improvement projects from planning through completion, keeping them on time, on budget, and done right.
**Reporting and Communication:**You maintain a consistent reporting cadence with the executive team, covering production performance, KPIs, staffing, and any issues that need visibility.
**Communicate Timely Feedback:**You set clear expectations, coach team members to grow, and own both morale and performance management. You are comfortable with praise, hard conversations, disciplinary action, and conflict resolution, and always follow through.
**Manage by the Numbers:**Define, track, and report on KPIs across production, quality, throughput, and people performance, and turn that data into action.
###Who You Are
You have a deep background in business and print manufacturing. You have demonstrated success in scaling and managing large operations that include a variety of print and production technologies: offset, digital, or large format, bindery, packaging. You understand the nuances of color, substrates, and finishing. You've led teams in high-volume environments and have a track record of getting results through people. You handle complexity without passing it up the chain unnecessarily, and you're always looking for a faster or leaner way to get things done. You communicate clearly at every level and understand the urgency that comes with e-commerce.
