About the role

Why This Role Matters

ZOLEO is on a mission to connect people beyond cellular coverage – from backcountry adventurers to remote workers and emergency responders. Our award-winning satellite messaging device and app keep people safe and connected anywhere on Earth. Read about our real-life rescues made possible by ZOLEO here.

As we expand our hardware lineup to serve even more use cases, the Product Systems Engineer plays a pivotal role in ensuring our devices remain reliable, user-friendly, and intelligent. Sitting at the intersection of Product, Hardware, Firmware, Quality, and Operations, this role ensures that what we design is what we build – and that it performs in the field and in production.

Reporting into the Sr. Product Development Manager, you’ll own system requirements, drive verification and validation, and analyze field data to guide improvements. This is a mission-critical role for our next generation of products, supporting ZOLEO’s growth into new markets and helping us become an AI-first organization through smarter diagnostics, traceability, and continuous improvement.

What You’ll Do

Systems Engineering & Requirements Management

  • Translate PRDs/use-cases into clear, testable system and sub-system requirements; maintain the Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) end-to-end.
  • Drive change control: author/assess ECRs, participate in ECO boards, manage baselines and versioning.
  • Specify and maintain interface contracts (power, RF, mechanical, firmware APIs) and acceptance criteria.

Verification, Validation, & Compliance

  • Co-own the V&V plan with testing team: map coverage to requirements, define pass/fail, track defects to closure.
  • Prepare build readiness checklists for EVT/DVT/PVT; support factory test plan definition and fixtures. Participate in design and safety/compliance reviews (EMC/safety/regulatory) and capture actions.

Field & Production Performance Optimization

  • Monitor production yield, RMA trends, and telemetry; turn signals into prioritized fixes.
  • Lead or support RCA/8D on top issues; quantify impact and verify effectiveness after changes.
  • Build lightweight dashboards (e.g., Python/Jupyter, SQL, or BI tools) to make the data visible to the team.

Cross-functional Technical Leadership

  • Act as the Senior Product Development Manager’s technical delegate in stand-ups and vendor/CM calls when needed.
  • Keep the single source of truth current (Confluence, Propel, Jira).
  • Write crisp engineering documents: requirement specifications, interface definitions, test protocols, field issue summaries.

Qualifications & Skills

Must-Have

  • 3–6 years in systems/product/requirements engineering for electro-mechanical, RF, or embedded products.
  • Demonstrated skill writing clear, testable requirements and maintaining traceability.
  • Hands-on exposure to EVT/DVT/PVT/NPI and working with contract manufacturers and/or test labs.
  • Competence reading schematics/PCBs and mechanical prints; basic firmware familiarity (can discuss interfaces, logs, and build artifacts).
  • Experience with at least one requirements tool (e.g. Propel, Polarion, DOORS Next, CodeBeamer) and issue tracking (Jira).
  • Comfortable analyzing field/production data
  • Strong documentation habits; calm, structured communication.
  • Demonstrated alignment with AI-first thinking—embedding intelligence design and documentation tasks
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechatronics, or Systems Engineering (or equivalent).

Nice-to-Have

  • Background in RF, power, or ruggedized devices; exposure to EMC/safety/certification workflows.
  • Familiarity with 8D, FMEA, SPC, or reliability engineering methods.
  • Experience in satellite, IoT, or telecom devices.

Travel

Occasional travel to contract manufacturers, suppliers, or certification labs (

  • up to 10%).

What Success Looks Like

  • Traceability completeness: 98% of shipped requirements mapped to verification.
  • Coverage: 95% requirement coverage in V&V prior to release.
  • Field/production health: Quarter-over-quarter reduction in top-3 defect categories; stable FTQ/yield vs. Target.
  • Change velocity: ECR/ECO cycle time improved by 20% after first two releases.
  • Signal-to-noise: Clear monthly dashboards and a prioritized, data-backed issue list.

What We Offer

  • Competitive Pay: $120,000 - $150,000 annually, based on experience and impact.
  • Completion Bonus: Earn a bonus for successfully completing the contract term.
  • Flexible Work: A hybrid model of 3 days in the office that balances collaboration and lifestyle flexibility.
  • Paid Time Off: Vacation and sick days to help you rest, recharge, and stay well.
  • Learning & Development: A continuous learning environment that encourages experimentation and includes access to a professional development budget.
  • Inclusive Culture: A values-driven, collaborative, and supportive workplace.
