About the role

Job Description:

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient & staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Program Manager or designate, The Stroke Clinic Nurse Clinician participates in developing, implementing and evaluating programs/services in accordance with the Vision and Mission statements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA). Utilizing knowledge and clinical expertise in TIA care, Hyper acute cerebrovascular syndrome care and prevention, plans and provides direct nursing care to patients/residents in the TIA clinic in accordance with the unit/program philosophy, competency guidelines, policies and the BCCNM Standards for Nursing Practice in British Columbia. Provides consultation and in-service to nurses, physicians, other program teams, community nurses, and other health care team staff regarding the care and treatment of patients/clients/residents. Leads staff and assigns work as required. Teachers, staff and patients with a variety of health education needs with a specific focus on ACVS. Travels to other sites throughout the VIHA and other health care provider sites as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training And Experience

Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.

Graduation from a recognized nursing program, along with Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) specialty certification in specialty area, such as neurological nursing or evidence of an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Three (3) years recent related experience in TIA care, hyper acute cerebrovascular syndrome disease, including triage and treatment.

Two (2) years clinical research experience and quality improvement implementation or an equivalent combination of education and training in research preferred.

Basic CPR certificate required.

Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the current theories, technologies and practices in hyper acute cerebrovascular disease/TIA triage and care, cerebrovascular disease prevention, risk factor modification and self management principles.

  • Knowledge of TIA/stroke care and self-management related resources throughout the health authority

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team;

  • Demonstrated ability to organize workload and set priorities;

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently;

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and evaluate patient care;

  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected situations.

  • Demonstrated ability to counsel and assess learning needs of people throughout the life cycle;

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and apply the principles of adult learning in individual and group settings;

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts including co-workers, physicians, community agencies, representatives, patients/clients/residents and families;

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate change and implement best practices care

  • Demonstrated computerized software skills in word processing, spreadsheet, databases, presentations and Internet access and ability to operate a computerized subject care information system.

  • Demonstrated experience with clinical research.

  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
