We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time Development Technologist in our Electoral Area Services Division. This technical field and office position focuses on commercial gravel operations, soil deposit, drainage and storm water management, lot grading, and civil earthworks. This position, under the direction of the Manager of Electoral Area Planning, is responsible for technical and administrative work of a regulatory nature. Duties include reviewing, analyzing, and processing applications and technical report submissions for proposed commercial gravel operation applications, soil deposit applications, and other development applications as required. The position involves ensuring technical report compliance with Regional District bylaws and engineering standards as well as liaising with industry representatives, providing technical assistance to property owners, contractors, engineers, and staff.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A diploma or degree in Environmental Sciences, Civil or Environmental Engineering with a good understanding of and experience working in the municipal or provincial engineering field and is eligible for registration as an ASCT or equivalent combination of education and experience;

  • Knowledge of principles, practices and regulation concerning civil construction, soil deposit, commercial gravel operations and infrastructure;

  • Ability to review, analyze, assess and interpret plans, specifications, bylaws, technical studies, contracts, and other materials related to soil deposit and commercial gravel applications;

  • Knowledge of environmental principles, practices and regulation governing soil deposit and gravel extraction, including environmental and nuisance monitoring;

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to express thoughts and ideas clearly, and converse with a wide range of people including technical consultants, elected officials, staff and the general public to provide advice, make recommendations and deliver effective presentations;

  • Ability to work in the field and conduct inspections of development sites in a variety of conditions.

The start rate for this Union position is $39.90 per hour plus a comprehensive benefits package. Upon successful completion of the required six-month probationary period, the wage will increase to $46.94 per hour.
