Position Summary

As counsel supporting our community operations and support office functions, you will play a key role in supporting legal compliance and operational decision-making across our growing portfolio of communities in British Columbia and Alberta. This role provides day-to-day legal support in the areas of contracts, landlord and tenant matters, licensing and regulatory compliance, and organizational policy development.

Working under the direction of the Head of Legal, the Legal Counsel assists operational leaders by translating legal requirements into practical guidance that supports safe, compliant, and effective community operations. The role also contributes to the drafting and review of legal agreements, internal policies, and compliance processes while helping identify and mitigate operational legal risks.

This position works closely with the Head of Legal and other senior leaders across the organization to ensure legal matters affecting communities and support office functions are addressed efficiently and in alignment with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day legal support to our support offices and community leadership teams on various legal matters
  • Draft, review, negotiate and revise operational agreements used across Optima Living communities including product purchase agreements, commercial lease agreements, residency agreements, and service agreements
  • Maintain and update standardized contract templates and legal documentation used across the organization
  • Support communities with landlord and tenant and other residency matters including interpretation of tenancy legislation and answering questions related to residency agreements and regulatory matters
  • Assist with reviewing and updating residency agreements and other template agreements used within communities
  • Monitor licensing requirements, oversee license applications, and assist communities in maintaining compliance with regulatory and licensing obligations across BC and Alberta
  • Assist with responding to regulatory inquiries and operational compliance matters as they arise
  • Support the development, drafting, and review of organizational policies and procedures to ensure alignment with legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Conduct legal research related to legislation impacting seniors living operations including landlord-tenant law, healthcare regulations, and employment-related matters
  • Assist operational leaders in identifying legal risks within contracts, policies, or operational practices and recommend mitigation strategies
  • Maintain organized legal documentation including contracts, policy records, and regulatory compliance materials
  • Collaborate with the Head of Legal, other senior leaders, and external legal advisors on legal matters affecting the organization
  • Support internal initiatives that improve governance, compliance, and operational legal processes across Optima Living
  • Assist with corporate-governance related matters

Qualifications & Experience

  • Law degree (LLB or JD) from an accredited institution
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or the Law Society of Alberta, or eligible for membership
  • Early career lawyer (0–4 years of practice) with experience or interest in corporate law, health law, regulatory law, employment law, and/or operational legal support
  • Experience drafting and reviewing contracts or legal agreements
  • Strong legal research, drafting, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to explain legal concepts clearly to operational leaders and non-legal stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and legal document management tools

Nice to Have

  • Experience with landlord and tenant legislation in BC or Alberta
  • Experience working in a law firm or in-house legal department or supporting business operations teams
  • Experience in seniors living, healthcare, or other regulated service environments
  • Familiarity with licensing and regulatory frameworks related to assisted living or healthcare
  • Experience assisting with policy drafting, governance documentation, or compliance programs
