Position Summary

The Equipment Operator performs a variety of duties in connection with road maintenance, including operating and repairing all departmental equipment, installing and maintaining road signs, maintaining municipal buildings and other facilities, installing and repairing municipal drains, and assists with operational requests from other municipal departments. Equipment Operators also undertake annual capital construction projects related to, road construction, sidewalk construction, and annual tar and chip resurfacing. Equipment Operators also perform all required winter maintenance activities during the winter maintenance season including operating snowplows, sidewalks plows, and all other associated equipment.

Responsibilities

Infrastructure Maintenance

  • Operates machinery, tools and equipment required to maintain road infrastructure, including snow and ice management, grading roads, excavating, hauling and spreading materials, operating heavy construction machinery and trucks, and conducting seasonal roadside maintenance.
  • Installs and maintains regulatory, warning and information signs as per the Ontario Traffic Manual.
  • Reports road conditions, damage, vandalism, and other conditions to Supervisors and carries out repairs as directed.
  • Picks up litter and debris within Municipal right-of-way.
  • Repairs guardrails, municipal sidewalks, shoulders, storm sewers.
  • Installs traffic calming (e.g. speed humps).
  • Operates the Street Sweeper.
  • Assists with installing traffic control devices to ensure a safe working environment within the roadway as per the Ontario Traffic Manual.
  • Undertakes legislated road patrols.
  • Undertakes roadside forestry activities.
  • Assist with street light maintenance.

Infrastructure Construction and Renewal Management

  • Repairs, replaces and/or installs municipal drains, including steel culverts, tiling, catch-basins, and erosion control devices.
  • Assesses type and quantity of material needed for road construction, assists with ordering gravel and other materials, and reports material quantities consumed.
  • Operates and performs chip sealing operations required for maintenance activities and new construction projects.
  • Performs and undertakes road, sidewalk, and other transportation related construction projects, operating a variety of heavy construction equipment.

Fleet and Facility Management

  • Performs all required mechanical maintenance of heavy construction equipment and vehicles (i.e. oil changes, tire repair, painting, wiring and welding).
  • Performs daily safety inspections of equipment and vehicles and reports any deficiencies.
  • Assists with inventory procurement.
  • Performs safe operations of all heavy construction equipment and vehicles and ensures proper use of chemicals.

Winter Maintenance

  • Operates winter maintenance equipment, including plow trucks, front-end loaders, sidewalk plows, graders, heavy construction equipment as directed.
  • Maintains municipal parking lots and Public Works and Engineering facilities.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assists with Water repairs.
  • Undertakes special projects and performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with corporate objectives.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • High school diploma plus additional certifications of about one year.

Experience

  • 4-5 years of progressive experience in a transportation municipal operations environment.

Specialized Training & Licences

  • Preferred Standard First Aid CPR/AED Level C Training.
  • Preferred Occupational Health and Safety Confined Space Training.
  • Preferred Completion of the TJ Mahoney, Construction & Maintenance Certification accredited by the Ontario Good Roads Association.
  • Preferred Completion of a Heavy Equipment Operator Program.
  • Forklift Training
  • Working at Heights

Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment. In all weather conditions
  • Strong technical knowledge of transportation-related processes, methodologies, Provincial regulations, and construction practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7.
  • Common core and surface miner training for municipal quarry pit operations.
  • Fuel handling safety training.
  • Facility overhead crane training.
  • Chainsaw certification.
  • Welding.

Other Requirements

  • A valid Ontario class AZ or DZ driver’s license in good standing.
  • Criminal Records Check.
  • Able to lift 45kg (e.g. tires, brakes, parts).

Hours & Conditions of Work

This contract runs until March 31, 2026.

Normal hours of work are 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Seasonal evening and/or weekend shift work will be required. Overtime may be required depending on weather conditions and or if emergency after hours work is needed.

This position works frequently with heavy equipment, hazardous products containing MSDS, and around other utilities (hydro, water, gas, telecommunications, etc.). The use of Personal Protective Equipment is required at all times.

This Equipment Operator’s time will be spent predominantly in the field or while operating a motorized fleet.

Compensation

Middlesex Centre offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive employee benefit plan, including participation in the OMERS pension plan for this position.

Compensation for this position is currently $28.30 to $33.69 per hour.

The Municipality of Middlesex Centre, formed on January 1, 1998 with the amalgamation of the former Townships of Delaware, Lobo, and London, is a predominantly rural municipality in Middlesex County, with a population of approximately 18,000 over an area of 587.22 sq. kilometres. The Municipality is situated at the north, northwest and westerly limits of the City of London, and therefore enjoys both urban and rural amenities.
