The AMA is recruiting for the position of Government Relations Advisor. As a member of the Advocacy and Engagement team, the Government Relations Advisor will play a critical role in ensuring that AMA initiatives are supported through grassroots engagement, relationship building, strategic communication and community outreach.

The AMA has a hybrid work environment. The successful candidate will be based out of our Edmonton or Calgary office and will have the opportunity to work from home but will be required to go into the office or attend in person when required. This position will require some travel periodically.

Team Overview

The Advocacy & Engagement branch supports all areas of the AMA by acting as internal consultants to help achieve strategic and business objectives. Our expertise spans strategic communication planning, advocacy, government relations, media relations, writing and design, publication management, website and social media oversight, environmental scanning, event coordination and communication logistics.

Position Overview

The Advisor, Government Relations is a regular, full-time position. The advisor is responsible for helping to establish, build and then sustain the AMA’s MD+MLA Program: a robust network of relationships between physicians and all-party MLAs at the local constituency level to advance the advocacy goals of the AMA. This role emphasizes grassroots engagement, empowering physicians to become effective advocates within their communities and fostering non-partisan, constructive relationships with elected officials. While personal experience with lobbying/interaction with politicians is required, the primary focus is on facilitating direct, authentic connections between physicians and MLAs to advance health care policy and patient care priorities at the constituency and provincial levels. The individual will conceive and work with the team to deploy campaigns associated with their mandate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, train and support physicians to serve as local advocates and contacts for MLAs.
  • Work with third-party contractors of the AMA to develop toolkits, templates and resources to empower physician advocacy efforts.
  • Track and report on grassroots advocacy activities across ridings, providing updates to committees and leadership.
  • Monitor legislative activity, political developments and issues at the constituency level as part of overall AMA government relations scanning.
  • May cultivate and sustain relationships with designated government officials, elected representatives and key stakeholders, as part of a larger government relations team.
  • Ensure all grassroots advocacy activities comply with relevant laws, regulations and internal policies.
  • Support the Government Affairs Advisory Committee (GAAC) in strategy development and alignment with Board and organizational priorities.
  • With direction of Board, GAAC or Joint Physician Advisor Committee, organize town halls, forums and public events to directly connect physicians, MLAs and community members.
  • Analyze grassroots advocacy data to inform strategy, measure impact and identify areas for improvement.
  • Work with AMA’s Insights and Innovation Hub to capture, build out and act upon business intelligence data arising from MD+MLA program activity.
  • Prepare briefing notes, talking points and public-facing materials to support grassroots campaigns.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, public relations, political science or related field.
  • Minimum of 5-9 years of experience.
  • Type of experience required:
  • 5–9 years in
  • government relations, with demonstrated experience in grassroots advocacy, and constituency-level engagement. developing and delivering strategic communications, marketing or political campaigns
  • Experience in healthcare or member associations is an asset.
  • Proven ability to engage with grassroots political players, e.g., MLAs, MPs, constituency offices, constituency associations.
  • Media relations experience is an asset.

Skills:

  • High political acuity and sensitivity to complex policy environments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of political structures and local constituency operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver political strategy and tactics as well as communications, marketing or public relations strategy.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with MLAs, constituency offices and senior public servants.
  • Able to guide and coach others to build constituency relationships, including leveraging social and traditional media to amplify government relations messaging.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across all levels of the organization.
  • Able to work collaboratively and to complement government relations support being provided by an existing, third-party government relations agency.

The salary for this role is between $88,187 - $114,644 per annum.
