About the role
Are you a compelling storyteller who thrives on building meaningful connections with donors and supporters? Do you excel in a fast-paced environment where collaboration, creativity, and purpose-driven communication are key? The Alex is seeking a passionate and strategic Donor Communications Coordinator to help elevate our mission and deepen engagement with our community.
The Alex is Canada’s largest Community Health Centre; a place where compassion meets innovation to create meaningful change. We provide comprehensive health, housing, food, and social supports to people who need them most. But our work goes beyond individual care: we’re shifting the healthcare landscape to show that there’s a better, more human way to deliver services.
At The Alex, we see the whole person, not just their immediate need. We meet people where they’re at, build trust, and walk alongside them on their journey from crisis to wellness, and from challenge to change. Every day, we tackle tough health and social issues head-on, driven by a belief in dignity, equity, and belonging for all.
The Donor Communications Coordinator is the storyteller, strategist, and creative mind behind how The Alex connects with its donor community. You’ll help people see the impact of their generosity - and feel part of something bigger.
As part of the Communications team, you’ll report directly to the Manager, Communications & Marketing, while working closely with the Director of Fund Development to support donor engagement goals. You’ll establish and maintain strong working relationships with fund development colleagues and be comfortable juggling multiple requests from various relationships and project managers. The ability to prioritize, manage competing deadlines, and provide thoughtful communications counsel will be key to your success.
This is a permanent, full-time position.
What You'll Do
- Develop and execute donor-focused communications strategies and content that strengthen relationships and drive engagement.
- Write compelling stories, cases for support, website content, e-blasts, newsletters, blogs, social media posts, and impact reports that reflect The Alex’s authentic voice.
- Collaborate closely with the Fund Development team to deliver donor stewardship materials, campaign collateral, and special appeals that align with organizational goals.
- Manage multiple priorities and requests from various relationship managers and fund development leads, offering guidance on tone, message, and timing.
- Design polished, on-brand materials in Canva or Adobe Creative Suite for print and digital channels.
- Support storytelling through a range of media — including video, photography, and written content.
- Contribute to larger campaign and strategy development efforts that enhance donor engagement and elevate The Alex brand.
- Tailor messages for different audiences, including major donors, community partners, and corporate sponsors.
- Use Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and related tools to organize, track, and deliver communications efficiently.
- Jump in to support broader departmental priorities when needed — we’re a collaborative team that shows up for each other.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Who You Are
This role is ideal for a skilled communicator with a strong sense of purpose - someone who knows how to weave words and visuals into stories that move hearts and motivate action. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding of the nuances of donor-focused communications; knowing how to engage, inspire, and steward support while keeping all messaging and visuals consistent with The Alex’s brand and values.
What You Bring
- Degree or diploma in communications, journalism, PR or related field.
- 3–5 years of experience in donor communications, fundraising communications, or a related role within a non-profit organization.
- Exceptional writing and storytelling skills with an instinct for emotion, authenticity, and clarity.
- Strong understanding of the unique tone, intent, and approach required for donor-focused communications.
- Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and counsel stakeholders on requests.
- Proficiency in Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
- Experience creating engaging content across multiple platforms including print, web, social media, and video.
- Understanding of donor stewardship principles and audience segmentation.
- A collaborative and adaptable approach with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- High emotional intelligence, sound judgement, and a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset.
- Curiosity, creativity, and a drive to learn new technologies quickly.
- Experience in Microsoft 365 and SharePoint environments an asset.
- Experience in campaign or strategy development considered an asset.
- A reliable source of transportation; travel is required for off-site meetings and events.
- A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance.
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.
Work Environment and Hours
- The Alex Community Health Centre: 2840-2 Ave SE, Calgary, AB.
- 1.0 FTE (37.5 hours/week)
- Standard hours are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Some evening and weekends will be required and flexibility in schedule may be available.
- Continuous extended periods of sitting, with some standing and walking (sometimes up or down stairwells).
- Occasional physical action requiring the ability to bend/crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel/crawl, and carry objects (up to 20 lbs.) throughout shift.
- Occasional travel within Calgary city limits is required.
What You’ll Get
- Purpose-driven work that makes a tangible difference in people’s lives and helps redefine what healthcare can look like in Canada.
- Not-for-profit market-aligned salary reflective of experience.
- Excellent benefits package that supports health, wellness, and work/life balance.
- Hybrid work environment, with flexibility to work from home 1–2 days per week.
- A supportive, inclusive team that values creativity, collaboration, and authenticity.

About Alexandra Comm Hlth Ctr
We know that good health is the complete state of physical, mental, emotional and economic well-being. We cannot enjoy whole health when we are hungry, when we are in chronic pain, when we don't have a roof over our head, when we feel disconnected from our community, when we are living in poverty. And fixing one of these issues while ignoring the rest is just a band-aid solution.
Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on, and our preventative, cost-effective programs save millions in taxpayer dollars by moving people from poverty to stability and from crisis to wellness.
