Purpose** Reporting to the Mine Manager, the Project Superintendent leads a multi-disciplinary team of technical, supervisory and administrative staff. The position is accountable for creating and executing on realistic capital expenditure and continuous improvement strategies specific to the local mine site.
Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee multiple mine expansion and construction projects, including engineering design activities outside of mine engineering / long-term planning capacity.
- Develop project plans, schedules, budgets and resource allocation plans ensuring compliance with the company’s Project Management Methodology.
- Liaise with on & off-site stakeholders to ensure project scope-of-work, permitting needs and execution plans meet the site’s strategic goals.
- Support and maintain Integrated Management System that identifies hazards/risks, monitors compliance, and ensures corrective actions are completed
- Ensure change management, risk assessment, operational readiness and project closeout activities pursuant to Company policy, regulatory requirements and industry best practice are in place and in-line with project complexity.
- Work with procurement and cost estimating specialists to develop clear work scopes, project budgets and contingency levels to ensure accurate AFE (Authorization for Expenditure) proposals are submitted.
- Participate in tender reviews and contractor selection activities related to project planning and execution.
- Ensure that contractor and consultant onboarding and mobilization is efficiently coordinated with the site’s operating, safety and training teams.
- Ensure that sufficient construction / contractor management is in place at all times, notably ensuring regular site inspections are carried out, and liaise with operations and maintenance groups as required where after-hours support or emergency readiness may require assistance from outside the direct project department.
- Ensure project progress related to physical completion and spending are recorded accurately and pursuant to the Company’s project management standards.
- Ensure project change order management systems are being followed.
- Report regularly to senior management on project progress, cost performance, risks and opportunities.
- Ensure that project stage definition (E.G. FEL 0-4), team composition (E.G. size of necessary Project Management Office) and delivery models (E.G. EPCM) are aligned to the complexity of the projects and level of risk.
Training and Education
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
- 5-10 Years of progressive experience in underground mining
- 5+ years of experience in project planning / execution
- 2+ years of supervisory experience
- Strong working knowledge of project/scheduling software (Primavera P6, MS Project, Deswik.IS, EPS, etc.)
- Strong working knowledge of scheduling, cost control and construction methods.
- Familiarity with SAP or similar EAM software
- Good financial knowledge with experience in budgeting and cost control
- Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills
- PMP designation strongly preferred
- P.Eng. designation an asset
