Unit Summary
The Operating Room at Hamilton General Hospital is a Level 1 trauma center that provides care to adult and pediatric patient populations. With 15 Operating Rooms, the multidisciplinary team functions within a complex, fast-paced environment. Together, the multidisciplinary team supports community hospital services and collaborates to provide excellent health care to patients in a number of clinical specialties. The Operating Room North specializes in orthopaedics, general surgery, dental surgery, neurosurgery, spine, urology, plastics, ENT, and burns. The Operating Room South specializes in cardiac and vascular services.

Position Summary
The Registered Practical Nurse participates in providing peri-operative nursing care in accordance with the job description and competencies for Registered Practical Nurses in the Operating Room at Hamilton Health Sciences.
Schedule Work Hours
days, evenings, weekends, nights, holidays, for on call shifts it is required to be at the hospital within 30 minutes
Qualifications
- Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
- Graduate of an approved Operating Room Technician program
- Current Certificates in Medication Administration, Enteral Nutrition Via Gastrostomy Tube, Urinary Bladder Catheterization, Transcription of Physicians Orders, Advanced Wound Care and Airway Management, or has completed equivalent community college studies
- Current Heart and Stroke Foundation course in CPR or equivalent
- Recent (2 years) relevant Operating Room experience in a tertiary care facility
- Demonstrated skill and ability in cardiac, trauma and vascular surgeries
- Demonstrated interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
- Demonstrates commitment to the principles of professional practice
- Demonstrates judgment in carrying out his or her role or function and is responsible and accountable for acting on the interpretation of data
- Demonstrates critical-thinking and decision-making in assessment and problem identifications
- Demonstrates ongoing personal professional education and development
- Must be able to wear lead aprons for long periods of time (aprons 15-20 pounds in weigh, works for cases 1-3 hrs in length)
Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
