Safety Advisor – Construction to Commissioning Transition

Position Overview
WSG Energy Services is seeking an experienced Safety Advisor to support the transition from construction activities to commissioning and startup operations on a major LNG facility in Squamish, BC. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe execution of work during the Construction Completion, Mechanical Completion, Systems Turnover, Commissioning, and Startup phases of the project. The successful candidate will provide field-based safety leadership while supporting commissioning activities, energy isolation requirements, permit-to-work systems, and operational readiness processes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of the unique hazards associated with the transition from construction to an operating facility and have experience supporting large industrial, energy, or LNG projects. Preference may be given to local candidates.
Key Responsibilities
Provide field-based HSE support throughout construction completion, system turnover, commissioning, and startup activities. Support the safe transfer of systems from construction to commissioning and eventual operations ownership. Ensure compliance with WSG Energy Services, client, regulatory, and project-specific HSE requirements. Participate in commissioning planning meetings, startup readiness reviews, and daily coordination meetings. Monitor and support Permit to Work (PTW), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), isolation, energization, and verification processes. Conduct field inspections, safety observations, and audits focused on commissioning and startup activities. Facilitate safety orientations, toolbox talks, pre-job hazard assessments, and commissioning-specific risk reviews. Identify and mitigate hazards related to system turnover, equipment energization, pressure testing, flushing, functional testing, and startup operations. Support SIMOPS (Simultaneous Operations) planning and execution to ensure effective risk management across multiple work fronts. Review and verify Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Field-Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs), and Safe Work Procedures. Participate in incident investigations and corrective action implementation as required. Act as a key liaison between construction, commissioning, operations, and project leadership teams. Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection records, reports, and leading indicator metrics.
Qualifications & Experience
Post-secondary education or certification in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline. Minimum 5 years of HSE experience in industrial construction, energy, oil and gas, petrochemical, LNG, or commissioning environments. Demonstrated experience supporting construction-to-commissioning transitions and startup activities on major industrial projects. Strong knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and industry best practices.
Experience with
Permit to Work (PTW) systems Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs Energy Isolation Management Mechanical Completion and Systems Turnover SIMOPS Management Startup and Operational Readiness Programs Experience supporting pressure testing, hydrotesting, equipment energization, and process system startup activities is considered a strong asset. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with construction, commissioning, and operations personnel. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced project environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and digital safety management systems.
Preferred Certifications
NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) designation or equivalent. Construction Safety Officer (CSO) certification. COR Internal Auditor training. H2S Alive. Standard First Aid with CPR. Confined Space and Fall Protection training considered an asset.
Working Conditions
Site-based role located in Squamish, BC. Frequent interaction with construction, commissioning, and operations teams in an active industrial environment. PPE required at all times while on site.
