Overview:
EHN Complex Needs Facility Saskatoon is specifically designed to support individuals with elevated and unique needs. This facility provides essential services to people who require specialized emergency shelter support, where clients are accommodated based upon an assessment of their needs with the purpose of delivering services to clients within the community.
The Registered Psychiatric Nurses (also known as RPN) may work independently or as part of the multi-disciplinary health care team, which includes psychiatrists, physicians, nurses and clinicians. Under the direction of a Physician and the Nurse Supervisor, the RPN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care. They provide evidence-informed, trauma informed, culturally sensitive, person-centered and recovery-oriented nursing care to patients and their care providers.
Some of the duties they will perform include completing health history and mental status assessments, administering and assessing the effects of medications, responding to observed behavioral changes and implementing strategies to promote optimal mental health, physical health, and overall well-being of their patients. The RPN may also provide education on a range of mental health and addiction topics to a variety of audiences and provide assistance in the evaluation/assessment of client-related physical health problems, issues and questions.
The RPN collaborates with healthcare professionals in a safe and secure setting to provide quality patient care to patients receiving treatment for their mental health and/or addiction(s). The RPN spends much of their time in direct contact with patients.
During the course of their work, registered psychiatric nurses may be exposed to blood, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, chemicals and other safety hazards. Registered psychiatric nurses can also be exposed to potentially violent and aggressive situations when working with patients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Gauging patients' psychiatric states.
- Collaborating on psychiatric intervention plans.
- Administering psychotropic and similar medications.
- Monitoring adherence to non-medicinal treatment regimens.
- Removing potentially harmful and triggering environmental features.
- Recording patients' health journeys and reporting on notable alterations.
- Conducting targeted psychoeducation.
- General nursing duties associated with the treatment of addiction and mental health.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited school of RPN with pharmacological training
- Registered Psychiatric Nurse registered in the Province of Saskatchewan
- Valid First Aid and CPR
- Recent clinical experience, including medication administration and leadership duties
- Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular and consistent basis
- Leadership /Charge experience preferred
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Good problem solving and decision-making skills
- Demonstrated use of proper body mechanics and ability to perform heavy lifting
- Knowledge of / experience with a team based person-centered care approach
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team
