The Role
The Summer Student Animal Care Worker supports the daily care and wellbeing of animals at the Edmonton Humane Society. Working under the supervision of the Animal Care team, this role focuses on feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and general shelter support to ensure a high standard of care and humane treatment for all animals.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Animal Care & Enrichment
- Provide daily feeding and care for cats in assigned wards
- Clean and maintain animal enclosures to ensure a safe and healthy environment
- Socialize cats to support their wellbeing and adoption readiness
- Assist with dog walking and enrichment activities as required
- Observe and report any changes in animal behaviour or health
Shelter Operations & Support
- Assist with laundry duties, including washing, drying, and organizing
- Support kitchen operations, including dishwashing and maintaining cleanliness
- Clean and organize animal care areas, including kitchens, storage spaces, wash bays, and grooming areas
- Communicate effectively with staff and volunteers regarding animal care needs
Administrative & Record Keeping
- Complete feeding and cleaning records accurately
- Enter animal care requests as needed
- Follow shelter protocols and support overall daily operations
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education & Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Current enrollment in, or interest in animal care, veterinary, or related fields is considered an asset
- Any experience working with animals is considered an asset
- Experience in a fast-paced or physically active environment is beneficial
Skills & Abilities
An ideal candidate possesses a strong interest in animal welfare and is comfortable working with animals of various species and temperaments. They are reliable, able to work independently, and capable of managing tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with staff and volunteers are essential. The role requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform frequent standing, bending, and repetitive movements.

Compensation & Benefits
The Summer Student, Animal Care Worker role is classified in Pay Band 1, with a pay range of $16.44- $17.50 per hour, commensurate with the successful candidate’s education and experience.
Hours of Work
- Standard hours: 35 hours per week; however, this position is expected to work the hours necessary to fulfill departmental responsibilities.
- Flexibility may be required for evenings, weekends or special events.

Founded in 1907, the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) is one of the oldest and most reputable charities in both Alberta and the animal welfare sector. Each day, EHS strives to be a model of excellence in the advancement of animal welfare and to lead the movement in creating a more humane world.
Thousands of homeless, neglected and abandoned companion animals from Edmonton and surrounding communities are taken in by EHS every year.
