Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

This position provides assistance with the maintenance of the building exterior and interior, physical plant and all building systems and the surrounding grounds. He/she will perform a wide range of skilled mechanical preventative maintenance tasks and building repair work; perform general upkeep of the external property; and provide required sanitation and cleaning. He/she is part of a team responsible for the provision of a safe and comfortable building environment for all clients and CS(C) staff.

Accountabilities:

  1. Maintenance
  • Completes assigned facility work orders for repairs, maintenance and preventative tasks in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Completes regular reviews of the condition of the facility, on a timely basis, in conjunction with the supervisor.
  • Conducts required readings on heating plant and HVAC equipment, including logging pertinent data in logbooks, in conjunction with the supervisor, per schedules.
  • Resolves minor troubleshooting of building systems.
  • Completes adjustments and required repairs, as assigned or by following instructions, to Salvation Army standards and in accordance with maintenance procedures.
  • Cleans, maintains, and services equipment and tools; performs maintenance on small engines; ensures proper storage
  • As assigned by Facilities Supervisor, organizes and maintains supplies required for site operation; takes inventory count.
  1. Grounds Keeping
  • Ensures the external property is in a safe and clean condition, in all seasons, for pedestrians and vehicles, by removing snow and ice from sidewalks and parking lots, cleaning sidewalks and removing litter.
  • Maintains the grounds in a tidy and clean condition by mowing lawns, raking and weeding, pruning shrubs and trees, watering lawns and shrubs/trees, cleaning eaves.
  • Safely operates all assigned company vehicles and related equipment.
  1. Custodial
  • Completes custodial tasks in accordance with Custodial Standard Operation and Safety Manual.
  • Follows established procedures and documentation for inventory tracking.
  1. Administrative and Other
  • Maintains, and keeps organized, supplies required for site operation; takes inventory count, as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Completes daily logs and required records for all maintenance, grounds keeping and custodial tasks performed each day.
  • Follows established procedures and documentation for inventory tracking.
  • Assists supervisor as assigned in preparing estimates and schedules for repairing and maintaining the facility.
  • Assists in event setup and takedown.
  • Attends meetings as requested by the Director of Facilities and/or Supervisor.
  • Completes, and renews as required, all Salvation Army mandatory training and training required for the position.
  • May assist in preparing request for purchase order requisitions with all required backup as instructed.
  • May participate in annual safety inspections.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a regular, full-time position at 40 hours per week.
  • May be required to work at all CS(C) sites; travels between sites using company vehicle. Personal vehicle can be used in some cases.
  • Work is sometimes conducted in disagreeable conditions such as: noise from equipment (weed whippers; mowers; shop tools); working in confined spaces and heights (performing overhead maintenance and/or repair work up to 35 feet up), inclement weather and extreme temperatures (heat/cold); exposure to toxic chemicals; electrical hazards; exposure to bodily fluids and dealing with angry people.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Satisfactory Police Information Check (PIC) with Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Satisfactory Child Intervention Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers License
  • Satisfactory Alberta Drivers Abstract
  • Standard First Aid/Level A or C CPR
  • WHMIS training
  • Vertical Mast Lift training
  • Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, and values.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • One (1) year but less than three years prior related experience in building operations, including heat plant, HVAC and general repairs (i.e., electrical & plumbing).
  • One (1) year experience in year-round groundskeeping.
  • Six months experience in custodial duties.
  • Knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology, i.e., Outlook, Word Processing, creating and managing EXCEL spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of building operation components (i.e. HVAC, DHW, Fire Protection system).
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance of small engines is an asset.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Able to proficiently perform necessary maintenance tasks in all, or some, of the following areas: plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, carpentry.
  • Can safely and efficiently operate company vehicles and machinery (i.e. grass mowers, snow blower, snow brush, All Terrain Vehicle (Brutus) with various PTO attachments, floor scrubber, extractor, power washer, commercial washer and dryer).
  • Strength and agility, and able to endure frequent walking, bending, lifting heavy materials (up to 50 lbs), as well as ability to stand for extended periods, especially in performing groundskeeping duties (i.e. raking leaves, grass cutting, snow shoveling).
  • Comfortable climbing on, and working off, ladders at various heights (painting, dusting, changing light bulbs, cleaning eavestrough, pruning trees), as well as performing various maintenance and cleaning tasks from an elevated platform (30+ feet above ground).
  • Able to attend to the worksite outside of regular schedule, including very early hours (4:00 am) in all weather conditions (i.e. clearing snow during heavy snowfalls).
  • Able to respond to emergencies after hours (24/7) if required.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $18.14 to $22.68 with a maximum of $27.22.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
