About You / What We Are Looking For

The Police Services division is currently recruiting for auxiliary Custodial (Cell) Guard staff to join our team within the Coquitlam RCMP Detachment. In this position, you will work 12 hour shifts (7am-7pm and 7pm-7am) and will be responsible for the safekeeping of prisoners as well as maintaining the security of the jail cell area.

The successful candidate will maintain surveillance over prisoners’ physical condition, visually and through the use of closed circuit TV, to ensure their security and welfare. Other duties include booking and searching/inspecting prisoners, as well as preparing and serving meals to prisoners and completing light janitorial and maintenance tasks within the jail cell area.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have completed Grade 12, supplemented by related training and experience, including valid first aid and CPR certification. Other requirements include strong interpersonal and organizational skills, the ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with all levels of internal and external contacts, the ability to create and maintain accurate and detailed records, as well as being comfortable using various RCMP computer applications. Applicants under consideration must also be able to obtain and maintain an Enhanced RCMP Security Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidates will have experience working in a similar custodial environment or working in a policing environment, as well as the ability to deal with prisoners and other staff members during sometimes high pressure situations in a calm and professional manner. Additional courses or certifications in Criminology or a related field would also be considered an asset.

What We Offer:

This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $31.77 - $34.39 plus 12% in lieu of benefits. The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.
