The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is one of Canada's largest learning and research multi-campus hospitals. With more than 1,400 beds and approximately 17,000 staff, physicians, residents and volunteers, we deliver specialized care to the Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec and Eastern Nunavut regions. At The Ottawa Hospital, we don't just serve our community, we belong to the community. That insight is at the heart of our ambitious plan to reshape the future of healthcare for our community.

From the compassion of our people to the relentless pursuit of new discoveries, The Ottawa Hospital never stops seeking innovative solutions to the most complex health care challenges while continually engaging with the community to support our vision to provide each patient with the kind of care and compassion we would want for our loved ones.

Working together with its research institute, the University of Ottawa, and other partners, the hospital is continually gaining national and international recognition for high-quality patient care, teaching and research, while striving to meet the needs of the culturally diverse community we serve.

Position Information

Reporting directly to the Managers of Nursing Professional Practice or Nursing Education, the primary purpose of the RN Clinical Scholar role is to mentor new nurses, help build/assess their clinical expertise, and support successful transition, integration, and retention within the University of Ottawa Heart Institute health team workforce. Clinical Scholar support will focus on mentoring newly graduated nurses, however, will also extend to internationally educated nurses or other nurses seeking to upskill and transition into selected specialty areas.

RN Clinical Scholars will work closely with other members of the Nursing Practice, Education, and Corporate Service teams to promote and use evidenced based knowledge. They will work with Clinical Managers, Nurse Educators, Care Facilitators, and Charge Nurses in selected areas to identify support needs and build a positive learning mentorship-professional practice environment.

The role serves as an added layer of support for new nurses and facilitates unit leadership to quickly identify and address challenges novices are facing, allowing for early interventions and successful transition to safe, independent practice. RN Clinical Scholars provide on-unit support and mentorship guidance by facilitating in-the-moment best practice education with respect to both clinical and non-clinical skills.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated at least proficient to preferably expert clinical skills based on past performance appraisals and similar expertise implementing nursing knowledge of patient assessment, care planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care on units they support. The successful candidates will also demonstrate high emotional intelligence, an appreciation for life-long learning, and exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; all needed to support new nurse integration.

This position is for Electrophysiology/Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory/Cardiac Day Unit.
