About the role

“How do you live in the moment?”

We are passionate about ‘Making Every Moment Matter’™. We are seeking a candidate that shares our values - a person who has a passion to make a difference, who has a strong moral compass and who has a commitment to teamwork. The ideal candidate is a warm and loving person who makes meaningful connections with those they are caring for.

The Associate Nurse Manager provides clinical and operational leadership to support the safe, respectful, and consistent delivery of resident care. Reporting to the Director of Care, this role supports the overall provision of care and services, coordinates unit-level quality activities, and coaches staff in evidence-informed best practices.

In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, Assistant Director of Care, Director of Care, and Interdisciplinary team lead, the Associate Nurse Manager supports compliance with applicable legislative and professional requirements (including FLTCA/O. Reg. 246/22 and CNO expectations), contributes to inspection readiness and supports the implementation and sustainment of corrective action plans.

**Wage Rate:**The starting annual salary is $75,000

**Vacancy:**This is an existing vacancy.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direction to the nursing team in all aspects of resident care and act as “Clinical Lead” in the absence of the DOC, Executive Director, and/or Nurse Manager (as scheduled/required).

  • Coordinate day-to-day unit operations by prioritizing resident needs, directing workflow, and ensuring appropriate escalation to leadership/on-call resources.

  • Serve as a clinical resource and coach staff to strengthen assessment, care plan implementation, communication, and documentation quality.

  • Model and promote a person-centred approach that respects dignity, privacy, choice, autonomy, and self-determination, consistent with the Residents’ Bill of Rights.

  • Support culturally safe practice by encouraging respectful communication and adapting care routines—where safe and feasible—to resident preferences, language, values, and spiritual/cultural needs.

  • Support effective communication with residents and families, including de-escalation and conflict resolution when concerns arise.

  • Support implementation, monitoring, and best-practice coaching for required programs, including:

    • Falls prevention and management
    • Skin and wound prevention/management
    • Continence care management
    • Palliative Care and Pain management
    • Restorative care
    • Nutrition and hydration support
    • Expression of Needs
    • Least-restraint / restraint minimization practices
    • Medication Administration
  • Coach staff to use approved approaches (e.g., GPA principles where applicable), identify triggers, document patterns, and follow individualized approaches to care that promote dignity and safety.

  • Reinforce least-restraint practice by ensuring alternatives are attempted first, that any PASD/restraint-related interventions follow the care plan and direction of regulated staff, and that monitoring/documentation and escalation occur promptly when concerns arise.

  • Identify unit learning needs and coordinate education supports in collaboration with the Staff Development Coordinator and DOC/Nurse Manager.

  • Build and maintain relationships with external partners (e.g., public health, community colleges/universities, vendors, professional associations, regional education networks) to support training, updates on best practices, and access to learning opportunities.

  • Coordinate or support delivery of external education sessions (in-services, workshops, competency refreshers) and track completion where required.

  • Provide leadership to support safe medication processes on the unit (documentation quality, timely follow-up, escalation of concerns, and staff coaching on best practices).

  • Support compliance with medication storage/security and unit processes for controlled medications as applicable (counts, discrepancies, reporting, follow-up).

  • Ensure medication incidents/near misses are escalated, documented, and supported through investigation, corrective actions, and education as required.

  • Support and/or coordinate the safe medication destruction process.

  • Support safe and respectful dining experiences by reinforcing meal-time dignity, choice, and culturally appropriate preferences where possible.

  • Monitor and escalate concerns related to poor intake, weight change, dehydration risk, swallowing/feeding concerns, and changes in resident status to regulated staff and the interdisciplinary team.

  • Support documentation of intake/assistance needs and ensure care plans are updated when patterns or risks change.

  • Reinforce Routine Practices and Additional Precautions (hand hygiene, PPE, point-of-care risk assessment, respiratory etiquette) and ensure staff follow outbreak procedures as directed.

  • Promote person-centered IPAC communicating precautions, preserving dignity/privacy during precautions, and supporting reasonable cultural/spiritual accommodations when clinically safe and feasible.

  • Escalate infection control concerns promptly and support staff education and auditing as directed.

  • Ensure timely, accurate, objective documentation practices and coach staff on documentation quality and accountability.

  • Support understanding that daily documentation (ADLs, behaviours, mood, pain cues, continence, mobility, nutrition/hydration, skin risk) contributes to care planning and standardized assessment processes (interRAI).

  • Support and/or complete unit chart audits and follow-up actions to improve documentation, care plan accuracy, and clinical practice consistency.

  • Participate in Quality Improvement Plan activities and progress reporting; support implementation and sustainment of improvement initiatives.

  • Assist with evaluation of resident programs and services for relevance, quality, and effectiveness; identify gaps and implement improvements.

  • Identify potential risks proactively; track and trend unit concerns (e.g., falls, skin, expression of needs, medication incidents, infection risks) and escalate to DOC/Nurse Manager.

  • Assist the DOC/Nurse Manager to maintain inspection readiness by completing unit compliance checks, ensuring evidence is current, and supporting timely follow-through on requirements.

  • Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of corrective action plans following audits, incidents, complaints, or inspection findings.

  • Ensure staff understand and follow the incident and complaint reporting processes; support documentation quality and timely escalation.

  • Support prevention of abuse and neglect by promoting safe, respectful care and escalating concerns immediately per policy.

  • Participate in investigations as required and ensure follow-up actions and education are implemented.

  • Supervise and monitor staff performance, resident routines, and unit activities; provide real-time coaching and follow-up.

  • Conduct Employee Performance Reviews and support performance management plans (learning plans, corrective actions, documentation).

  • Assist with recruitment, onboarding, retention, and (as applicable) termination processes in collaboration with DOC/HR.

  • Apply the collective agreement consistently and respectfully in day-to-day decision-making and problem-solving.

  • Promote a safe work environment by ensuring staff follow safe work procedures, use PPE appropriately, and report hazards/incidents promptly.

  • Support workplace violence/harassment prevention expectations by escalating concerns and participating in investigations and corrective actions as assigned.

  • Participate in safety training, drills, and compliance activities, supporting a culture of due diligence.

  • Support emergency preparedness by ensuring staff follow emergency procedures and participate in drills/training as required.

  • During emergencies (e.g., fire, evacuation, power disruption, outbreak escalation), coordinate unit actions, staffing direction, resident safety measures, and communication/escalation in accordance with the Home’s emergency plan.

  • Promote the efficient use of human, material, and fiscal resources on the unit to support high-quality resident care.

  • Monitor nursing supplies and equipment needs (availability, appropriate use, expiry checks as applicable) and escalate shortages or concerns promptly.

  • Support inventory controls and cost-conscious practices by reducing waste, ensuring appropriate product use, and coordinating replenishment processes per policy.

  • Collaborate with leadership to monitor supply budget trends and implement strategies to maintain service levels while managing costs.
