About the job
Working under the supervision of the Manager, your role will include:
- Directing, coordinating and supervising the maintenance and repair of all marine vessels, terminals/facilities and mechanical equipment for the regional marine service;
- Interpreting and applying policy, procedures, standards and objectives;
- Preparing and recommending cost estimates;
- Monitoring expenditures against budgets and justifying additional funding;
- Ensuring work by contractors/shipyards is complete and acceptable to Transport Canada specifications;
- Ensuring all work is done safely and in accordance with Health & Safety Regulations, Canada Shipping Act and associated regulations;
- Providing technical direction and leadership to ferry repair crew members; and
- Representing the Ministry in providing information to the general public, local and government authorities and contractors.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
- The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class DZ driver's license is required to operate and maintain Class D trucks with hydraulic features. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid class DZ driver's licence upon being hired.
Technical and Legislation Knowledge
You have knowledge of:
- construction and maintenance methods and procedures to effectively assess need for and supervise the construction, maintenance and repair of ferries, ferry terminal docks, terminal facilities and de-icing systems
- shipyard repair practices and procedures
- the welding and carpentry trades as well as the operation of various construction tools and equipment to conduct and supervise repair operations
- administrative and financial processes and procedures to prepare budget estimates, provide expenditure and cost analyses, administer the process for external service providers and provide general administrative services to staff and management
- a variety of regulations and policies regarding safe working conditions and practices (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, HTA, Environmental Protection Act, Transport Canada regulations, Canada Shipping Act, Ministry Standing Orders for Ferry Operation)
Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- You are able to deal effectively with internal/external staff and officials
- You are able to provide advice and prepare reports/ recommendations for new equipment and procedures
Leadership and Administrative Skills
- You are able to effectively direct staff, shipyards and contractors in construction, repair and maintenance activities
- You can determine work priorities and appropriate action to deal with emergency repairs
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
- You are able to interpret and apply blueprints, plans and specifications, assess need for equipment repair or replacement, evaluate new equipment and technology and provide input to operational policy and procedures
