Position Summary
The Department of Community Services, Facility, Operations & Environment Division is accepting applications for the role of Seasonal Horticulturist.
Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations – Forestry, this position is responsible for maintaining the horticulture beds on Town property. The successful candidate will perform all aspects of horticulture work while ensuring that proper safety procedures are followed at all times.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Complete assigned horticultural work, including pruning perennials and shrubs in horticulture beds, planting annuals, perennials and shrubs, weeding, edging, mulching and watering various horticulture beds, and engaging in various horticultural work practices as required
- Operate specialized horticultural equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- Maintain written records as required, park bed maintenance work records, activity cards, traffic safety plans when required (for roadside hort. beds), site hazard assessments when required, etc.
- Assists other business units such as the Town Arborists when needed, for special arboricultural projects as directed
- Complies with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act
- Perform all other duties as assigned in accordance with Department objectives
Education & Experience
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Post-secondary education parks or maintenance or related field and/or combination of relevant post secondary education and related experience is an asset
- One (1) year’s experience in municipal public works or parks and/or other relevant and/or equivalent experience is required
- Two (2) years’ experience in municipal horticulture operations is an asset
Certifications and Designations
- Possession of a class “G” Ontario Driver’s license is required. The successful candidate must have a clean driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving habits. A recent driver’s abstract dated within 30 days will be required if selected for an interview. Persons with 4 or more demerit points need not apply.
- Valid Standard First Aid Certificate / CPR and WHMIS would be considered an asset
Additional Skills
- Working knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations, i.e. Ontario Health & Safety Act (OHSA)
- Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills are required
- Excellent verbal, written communication, interpersonal and customer service skills are an asset
- Mechanical aptitude to operate relevant equipment
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to use heavy tools and lift or move moderately heavy objects (up to 50lbs)
- Able to work outside in inclement weather
Hourly Rate: $26.40 - $28.51
