Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma (Grade 12) required.
  • Must hold a valid 3rd Class or higher Manitoba Power Engineer's Certificate.
  • Must hold (at least) a Class 5 Driver's License valid in Manitoba.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 years - significant practical or position related experience.
  • Significant related experience in a plant of comparable capacity is preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to communicate and follow instructions in English (verbal and written).
  • Must be able to work independently or in teams with minimal supervision.
  • Must have good organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have knowledge and experience of introductory computing skills (i.e. word processing; excel spreadsheets, e-mail, and web browser).
  • Must possess good knowledge of provincial Workplace Safety and Health Regulations.
  • Must adhere to and be in compliance of Power Engineers Act and Regulations of Manitoba.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physically capable of performing all duties assigned including climbing, bending, working in close quarters, under dirty and/or noisy conditions.

OTHER:

  • Will be required to provide satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse / Vulnerable Persons Registry.
  • Must have acceptable attendance and punctuality.

Key responsibilities

Under Chief Power Engineer or Lead Charge Engineer supervision, the Assistant Engineer 3rd class works directly with the Shift Charge Engineer for the continued safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the power plant in accordance with the Power Engineers Acts and Regulations of Manitoba. The Assistant Engineer 3rd class is required to work rotating shifts for a 24/7 operation which includes 12 hour and 8 hour shifts.

General Tasks

  • Assist in the operation and surveillance of all boilers, chillers and ancillary equipment.
  • Assists the Charge Engineer as required.
  • Performs water treatment duties as required.
  • Responds to Elevator trouble calls after regular business hours.
  • Performs maintenance and repair work on all plant equipment and campus equipment.
  • Participates in a preventative maintenance program and submits work orders in IWMS.
  • Acts as a liaison with other trades and campus security.
  • Completes shop inspections on a monthly basis.
  • Acts as a communication Centre: relays messages, transmits and receives information and initiates appropriate actions.
  • Maintains all operating logbooks as required by the Power Engineers Acts and Regulations.
  • Monitors campus building control systems.
  • Responds to campus trouble calls, fire alarms, and emergencies.
  • Performs emergency repair work to campus mechanical infrastructure.
  • Maintains Guarded Status Plants.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
