About the role

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Lifelong Learning Centre, the Daily Transportation Driver is responsible for the transportation of school aged children, upon approval of the Manager of Lifelong Learning Centre, for pick up and drop off at their residential location.

The Daily Transportation Driver works in consultation with the Manager to ensure the smooth operation of the transportation service in coordination with other staff and programming.

POSITION DUTIES:

Program Delivery

  • Conduct daily circle and safety inspections of vehicle and document and/or report deficiencies to the Manager.
  • Consult with the Manager regarding any requirements for additional transportation services for planned activities and/or excursions.
  • Perform sweeps and final inspections of the van from back to front each time children are picked up and returned home at the end of the day, sign off necessary documentation to confirm action required.
  • As required, maintain a transportation log of all activity such as odometer readings, return and departure times, and any other data required by the Supervisor.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear while on duty.

Program Administration

  • Conduct and/or schedule regular/routine maintenance of vehicle such as oil changes, installation of summer or winter tires, etc.
  • Schedule and transport vehicle for repairs as required to ensure the safe transportation of children and staff.
  • Follow established policies and procedures regarding forwarding of all receipts related to purchases for maintenance of assets.
  • Clean and sanitize the interior of vehicle on a regular basis and wash exterior of vehicle as required.

Training and Professional Development

  • Participate in relevant conferences, training workshops and related courses and meetings for professional development as required or directed.
  • Attend workshops, staff, or program meetings, etc. as directed.
  • Identify professional development / training needs as per policy directives for Manager’s consideration and approval.

Health and Safety

  • Observe health, fire, and safety policies and/or regulations while performing this service and uphold health and safety standards.
  • Ensure that the Health and Safety policies incorporated into daily working practices are adhered to.
  • Assist the Manager in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment by promptly reporting any existing and/or potential workplace hazards.
  • Maintain Standard First Aid Level C with AED certification.
  • Assisting staff with children in the event of any emergency.
  • Report all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the Manager or delegate and record such incidents as required and/or directed.

General Duties

  • Perform other duties relevant to the program as assigned by the Manager or designate.
  • Observe and uphold all policies, procedures, and practices of the Sagamok Anishnawbek and Biidaaban Kinoomaagegamik.
  • Ensure the asset/vehicle are always safe and secure.

Relationships

  • The Transportation Driver will keep the Manager of Lifelong Learning apprised of all-important matters related to Lifelong Learning Centre by providing regular written reports and oral reports as required and/or requested. The Manager will provide daily supervision of this service.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must submit a clear drivers abstract prior to first day of employment.
  • Maintain provide a Vulnerable Sector Check prior to first day of employment.
  • Immunizations must be kept up to date.
  • Must be sensitive to individual children’s differences and needs.
  • Have team building and decision-making skills; ability to solve problems and take initiative.
  • Excellent stress management and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, as approved by immediate Supervisor.
  • Hours may vary but shall not exceed 35 hours per week unless prior approval has been authorized by the Supervisor to exceed terms and conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma
  • Valid Class G driver’s license.
  • Valid First Aid / CPR Certificate is required.
  • Can relate well to children, staff, and parents is essential.
  • Have the physical ability to carry children when required.
  • Knowledge of Anishnawbe language and culture will be considered a definite asset.
