Position Summary:
The Transportation Manager is responsible for contributing to the strategic direction of the transportation team. In addition, this role manages the transportation and distribution system and procedures to ensure the efficient and economical delivery of Gordon Food Service’s products. This includes reviewing proposals and making recommendations for modifications in rates and transportation regulations.

Essential Functions:
- Manages transportation services through the consistent application of standard practices and procedures through the development, management, and evaluation of process improvement programs for transportation.
- Collaborates regularly with sales staff to ensure customer satisfaction including periodically attending sales meetings, visiting customer locations to assess delivery requirements, advising Customer Development Specialists of challenges with a particular customer, and approving off-day delivery requests and temporary requested routes.
- Performs administrative tasks to include invoice approval and processing, payroll, and incentive review. Completes shift or departmental reports as needed, separation, and payroll change notices. Accesses intranet to print forms, looks up benefits information, assists employees with the use of HR Info Office, and monitors OFIs.
- Performs employee relations activities to include planning and implementing departmental outings and contests. Responds to employee questions regarding benefits, and policies, efficiently and effectively by regularly communicating to employees about issues that affect them (changes in incentive structure, changes in procedures, branch results, and task team findings) through meetings, written materials, brief pre-shift updates, and one-on-one discussions. Listens to employee concerns, suggestions, requests, and goals to provide feedback to employees to resolve issues.
- Attends quarterly supervisor, annual combined operations, annual, department, warehouse and sales, impromptu, and various task team meetings to include transportation advisory group (TAG) as scheduled for strategic planning. Attend internal leadership training courses.
- Addresses safety issues and ensures that all policies and procedures are followed to include completing the appropriate paperwork for reporting work-related injuries and maintaining contact with injured workers to encourage and facilitate their early return to work. Investigate incidents (near misses, injuries, property damage, collisions, etc), and identifies preventative measures, corrective actions, and follows up on those measures. Issues safety violations and completes appropriate reports and random drug screens per DOT and GFS requirements.
- Conducts safety training as provided by Safety/Compliance and ensures that department-specific safety and job training requirements are met. Suggests classes or other skills development activities to employees. Conducts or directs new employee job/department orientation.
- Locates properties for office space and/or parking tractor-trailers. Identifies equipment service providers in all areas where drivers have a breakdown or need repair and negotiates contracts with providers of services, i.e. snow plowing, cleaning, and building repair. Plan and schedule all tractor-trailers within the branch for preventative maintenance. Ensures that a sufficient quantity of usable equipment including two-wheelers, ramps, trailers, and locks are available.
- Completes required coaching trips with drivers and assists with food shows and other special projects. May fill in to drive/deliver routes when necessary.
- Interviews, hires, trains, and retains staff. Conducts performance monitoring of staff, initiating follow-through with disciplinary action and termination in consultation with Human Resources when appropriate for the department. Mentors, motivates, and develops staff and acts as a role model and resource to them.
- Supports other GFS entities when needed by traveling to the location to provide driver ride-along training or other support needed for a minimum two-week period.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
- Strong written and verbal communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Knowledge of DOT and WCB regulations, and experience with handheld and delivery systems
- Ability to operate a delivery van and tractor-trailer preferred
- Must be able to lift up to 350 lbs using a two-wheeler
