Location: Sources Newton Center

Hours: 35 hrs/week

Salary: $24.46/hour

Start Date: ASAP

We are looking for an Intake Worker to join our Sources Newton Centre. This individual must have excellent communication skills, be a team player and passionate about social justice issues.

About Sources Newton Centre

Sources Newton Centre provides free information, referrals, and advocacy services to individuals navigating legal and social support systems. Our advocacy services include Poverty Law program, Mental Health program, disability support, and family law matters. Advocates assist with income assistance, disability benefits, CPP disability, tenancy issues, family law matters, forms, referrals, hearings preparation.

Description of position

Reporting to the Advocacy Programs Manager, the Intake Worker of Newton Center is a permanent employee of Sources Community Resources. This position is responsible for the following:

General Responsibilities:

  • Answer incoming calls and requests for service from the public. Complete intake screening to determine eligibility to programs and services.
  • Provide appropriate information, support and internal/external referrals.
  • Manage all front-end services including opening and closing; pick up mail; security related issues; scheduling front desk coverage; training of students and volunteers on front desk services and other related duties
  • Maintain client resources, client database and agency communications.
  • Provide administrative support by maintaining a database, distributing client surveys, and other related duties as required.

Other Organization Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in Advocacy Programs and Newton Resource Center meetings as requested.
  • Embraces the principles of Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Committed to promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Proactive in community engagement.
  • Participate in quality improvement and evaluation processes implemented by the Executive Director and/or Continuous Quality Improvement process.
  • Takes the initiative to build collaborative links with other organizations and various government departments in the sector.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands of Job:

  • Walking/Moving Around - 50%, Sitting - 75%, Lifting – 25%

Cognitive Demands of Job:

  • Independent Work - 100%, Task Memorization - 100%, Changing Priorities/Deadlines - 100%, Writing/Reading - 100%

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years post-secondary education or/and equivalent work experience in related social service field.
  • Understanding of advocacy, knowledge about provincial and federal income supports programs and tenancy will be considered as an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal communicational skills including public relations, oral and written skills.
  • Exercise good judgment, sensitive to a diverse client base and ability to deal diplomatically with sensitive client issues; strong sense of social justice and strong desire to assist and improve the lives of marginalized people.
  • Excellent administrative skills including the operation of multi-line switchboard, computer, office equipment. Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Exceptional knowledge of community resources and internet and research skills to research services for referral.
  • Must have valid BC Driver’s license.
  • Fluency in a second language is an asset.
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training (Training may be accessed through Sources)
  • Criminal Records check through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Criminal Records Review Program
