Job End Date October 31, 2026

This offer is conditional upon successful completion of a Criminal Record Check.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We strongly encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous person. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.

The UBC Department of Pediatrics, based at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR), invites applications for a Research Associate to join the laboratory of Dr. Pascal Lavoie. Dr. Lavoie leads a multidisciplinary translational research program focused on understanding immunity to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants and children, with the overarching goal of improving prevention and outcomes of RSV infection.

The Lavoie Lab at BCCHR is part of a dynamic research environment at UBC, integrating clinical and fundamental science to address urgent pediatric health challenges. Current projects include defining cellular and molecular mechanisms of immunity to RSV, identifying biomarkers of protective immune responses, and exploring novel vaccine and therapeutic strategies.

The Research Associate will play a central role in the planning, development, and implementation of RSV-focused projects in the Lavoie Lab. The successful candidate will collaborate with clinician-researchers, scientists, research coordinators, trainees, and laboratory staff to design and carry out studies that bridge basic immunology and clinical application.

Major Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to research projects investigating immune responses to RSV infection and vaccination.

Design and execute advanced immunological and molecular assays (e.g., multiparameter flow cytometry, single-cell sequencing, multiplex cytokine/antibody assays).

  • Establish systems immunology assays and apply those assays, including single-cell omics approaches to characterize immune responses in human samples.
  • Analyze and interpret high-dimensional immunological and transcriptomic datasets, preparing results for publication and presentation.
  • Prepare and lead the development of manuscripts, grant applications,

technical reports, and scientific presentations.

  • Supervise graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research staff, providing guidance on experimental design and data interpretation.
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Keep up-to-date with technological advances and the scientific literature relevant to RSV and pediatric immunology.
  • Perform other related duties, as required.

Qualifications Education and Experience:

  • A PhD in Immunology, Microbiology, or a related biomedical field, with a minimum of five years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in human immunology, viral infections, or vaccine research, with a strong record of publications in high-impact journals.
  • Experience conducting systems immunology assays and single-cell transcriptomics in human samples, including downstream analyses.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform computational data analysis of transcriptomic datasets (single-cell and/or bulk).
  • Expertise in advanced immunological techniques (flow cytometry, B and T cell functional assays, antigen-specific immune assays, cytokine/antibody profiling).
  • International research experience is considered a strong asset.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize and present complex data clearly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with fundamental and clinical research audiences.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects concurrently.
  • Capacity to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented environment.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and collegial laboratory culture.

POSITION DETAILS This position will begin November 1, 2025. It is a one-year term appointment subject to annual renewal.

The salary for this position will be $90,000 per annum.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE Please submit by email:

  • A curriculum vitae,
  • A letter of application including a statement of areas of expertise and strengths,
  • The names of three referees.

Applications should be submitted no later than 30 days after posting to:
